COVID 19 testing

I am starting another thread because I just was referred to a very good video by a pathologist in Boise Id. on the tests. we must have, we must all understand the reasons for the precautions. The video linked: HERE is excellent. It is about 8 minutes long.

He also emphasizes at the end, the importance of sanitation (hand washing) wearing of a mask, and separation. It is particularly important to know that there are many more asymptomatic people who may be carriers of the virus. Also we know that this is just not a killer of the aged or infirm, but that healthy children and young adults have succumbed to this virus.

This is a multi faceted problem. I consider myself young (although I'm actually 38 years old!). I live in an urban area with many young professionals.

Im shocked by the disregard by many young folks and even people in their late 30s to 40s. People in Boston are still partying! Parks are full, street party's and BBQs . Especially now that the weather is getting warmer, it's gonna be 60 degrees on Sunday. People don't care. Even young kids. I see young kids and teens roaming the streets in huge packs. Parents???????

Marty Walsh( boston mayor) shut everything down but people don't care. The only way to do it is to bring in the National Guard but then they'll say "you're violating our rights"! Lmao

Mass is seriously f#%ked...We are 3rd in the country after NY and Jersey. The bleep is hitting the fan in Boston. Our economy is so destroyed. People are freaking out. THIS IS BAD.
 
Unfortunately there still is a segment of the population who does not realize the seriousness of the situation. I was in a medical clinic this week, where only 50% of the aides were wearing the masks they were given. Lack of hand washing or sanitizer by the staff taking BP--that aid was not wearing a face mask, and no sterilization of the cuff (wrist) between patients! There was failure to wipe down sign in pads, no sanitary wipes or sanitizer for patients leaving. I sent a PM to the Dr. in charge. The clinic manager called me and wanted to know what I saw as a problem. I outlined it very carefully--and her comment was that she couldn't control people who didn't want to follow directions. That hand sanitizer and wipes were limited to 3 boxes every 2 days, so she could not put them out for the public. I told her that WalMart, Home Depot and CVS were doing better than her medical clinic was.

When I go out, I have mask, gloves and carry my own wipe down packets... There certainly is a segment of the general population who does not have a clue. Fortunately Florida is still low in infections, yet many business are still open...But I can see a lot of small and medium business failure in only a few more weeks. The cops seem to be preventing any large public gatherings.
 
IN a Seattle based study that tested about 1800 people, nearly 10% of those tested positive had not had any (NO) symptoms. Only 1 in 7 pregnant women that tested positive had symptoms. Three pregnant women have given birth while they were sick with symptoms, one of them was a 28 year old Respiratory Therapist who was on a ventilator. I believe all three were delivered by C-Section.

40% of the positives are between 20 and 60 years old and 7% of those succumbed to the Covid-19 virus. I don't remember the over 60 fatality percentage, but 28% comes to mind.

The average duration on a ventilator is 12 days.

This virus is nothing to play with. It means business -- means to kill if it gets half a chance.

Pay attention, stay safe if that means stay home, do it. Masks when you are out. Gloves or keep your hands in your pockets.

Thanks for posting this important video Dr. Bob. I had not seen it before, and it does a great job of explaining the need for multiple types of testing. I live in Western NY, we don't have the level of spread as NYC, but I have a number of relatives who live in NYC and it's suburbs. My wife is making masks for friends and neighbors. Hope all are staying safe.

Bob, thanks for the link. It seems that the story of Florida Man continues to prove itself so very true. I suspect the state is going a serious resurgence of the virus.

Florida Man seems to disprove Darwin. You'd think that there wouldn't be any of them left by now (and not just from the corona virus thing).

Ever notice the news stories about the drunk driver that gets into an accident, wipes out an entire family in another car, and is the only miraculous survivor?... yeah, Florida Man is like that.
 
Bob, I have come to the gloomy conclusion that all of the sanitation and social distancing efforts can accomplish is to slow the spread, but like the flu, this is here now and that everyone will be exposed sooner or later. And, like the flu, some will die from it every year. I would assume that as exposure spreads that a degree of herd immunity will develop, and that until then the official efforts are designed to ease the strain on medical facilities. But there does not seem to be any effective medical treatment for this, and the ventilator numbers are not encouraging. Flattening the curve does not change the totals, only the time span.

The higher number of persons showing antibody exposure is still only about 3% of the population, no where near enough for 'herd immunity'.

An original definition IIRC of close exposure of 10 minutes closer than 6 feet to one person. We have been able to keep our contact to 1% of that or less. I have decided not to try for 100% compliance, 99+ is close enough.

Our shipyard of 25K workers (pretty much full time) and county (275K), has now gone a week with only a few cases, despite being close to Seattle. The county and our city have closely observed all the rules. The county has 135 confirmed cases, and one death of a very old person. Wife and I walk or run every day, and we wave to people walking the other side of the road, they or we switch sides. We were gym rats, I think I would go bats without my walks or runs.

Great news about Bremerton! I am not at all surprised by the Stanford Study released Friday...We have a lot to learn about immunity of the CV19.
