CQR Anchor-25#

A friend of a friend gave me an almost new Lewmar 25# CQR anchor. He sold his boat and is done with all that. I tried to give him some money for it but he refused.
I believe it is too big for my C-Dory but don't want to just let it lay like a lawn ornament. My 22# Bruce works just fine.
West Marine sells them for $576. Is it a good anchor?? Anyone have experience with them??? What to do with it.??
Is it ok to sell something that was given to me??? :?
 
If you're going to do some cruising, it's good to have an extra anchor and a different style from your primary. The CQR is a good anchor; might hold better in a rocky bottom than your bruce. Good fortune on your part - Mark's idea of a dinner for your friends sounds nice. :D

I had the same anchor on our 23' sail boat in Norway. NEVER drug, and I don't believe it would be possible to damage it with a "small" boat. Great anchors !
 
One thing nice about the CQR is that when it is set, you can ride a full tidal change, swinging both directions and it is not likely to budge.

Actually the 25# CQR is sized for your C Dory--and you should do well if you decide to use it. However, the CQR is not perticularly a mud anchor. I have anchored hundreds--if not over a thousand nights on a CQR (60 to 70 lbs)--in larger boats. The only time I drug was either in ball bearing rocks,--which no anchor will hold in, and a couple of times in soft mud. One night at about 2 AM I realized I was dragging down on the Replica of the Mayflower--and started the engine, and moved a few hundred yards in Plymouth harbor. A Danforth held the rest of the night.

However, as I have noted in the past, currently I prefer the Delta over the CQR. Also be sure that it is a genuine CQR--that is a fully forged anchor, where the tangs which old the flukes to the shank are drop forged, not welded as in copies. Many Chinese copies have a "CQR" some something similar emplased with welding rod on the shank. A genuine CQR will have the logo forged into the shank.

Mine is fully forged with the name cast not welded in the shank.
Today I found what to do with it. I tried to anchor in 155' with 6 knots tide and 20 mph wind. The Bruce would not hold. I dragged it for 1.9 miles. The CQR is going on the chain tomorrow. Will see what it does.

You have a real one. Actually the name is forged in the steel also--not cast.

Just be sure that you have enough scope...Doesn't make a difference which anchor you have. For those conditions, I would want at least 5/16" chain, or even 3/8" chain (just to keep it down on the b1/4" ottom) and about 600 feet of rode! Sure a lot to haul up! (if you have the windlass, then you have to stick with the 1/4" High Test chain.
