We've had an osprey nest for two years now, about 50' up on a tree that lost it's top during Isabel. I put a 4' nest box on it and the first year, we had ospreys but somehow they either lost their egg(s) to crows or our eagles and didn't hatch any chicks. This year however, they had two and they "fledged" about three weeks ago. I noticed one of them making an approach to a branch nearby and he/she swung upside down and fell, fluttering almost all the way to the ground before gaining airspeed.

Then, the approach back to the nest box which was missed. A loop over the water and back to the box again, this time, the bird stalled about 5' over the box and crashed into the mass of sticks in a cloud of dust!

They've gotten a lot better at it since and have started to try their wings at fishing. Since we've started on the foundation for our new house, we've decided to move them out over the water. Here's their new pole and nest box. They will migrate south in about a month or so, at which time their old tree will come down and the new nest box will go up in time for their return in the spring. 16_August_2007_018.sized.jpg

Thats great making a home for them in your yard. I was over at the park in north everett a while back enjoying the view with susan. We see a guy with a lap top and a small round antenna at a picnic table. The antenna was pointed out in to the flats between everett and Marysville. We asked him what he was doing and where surprised to find out that he was monitoring osprey in there nest with a remote camera that was sending out a signal to his antenna. really great live shot right in the nest. Come to find out that the river mouth here is one of the largest nesting sites on the west coast. he also had a set of photos of the bird fishing but not being a fisher man he could not I.D. the types of fish, so I did it for him. Mostly cutthroat and sand daps. If anyone is in the area look for this guy and he will tell you all about his research and the birds.

Charlie-

Great work with the Ospreys! We know where most all of the 65 or so pairs are nested here on Shasta Lake and the same for the 33 or so pairs of Bald Eagles.

I understand that while some of them migrate not to far (Southern U.S., others go as far as Argentina!

I found a fledgling in the road to Bridge Bay about 5 weeks ago. It had managed to survive getting across four lanes of the I-5 freeway just south of the Pit River Bridge. Came out of a nest in on top a 330,00 volt transmission line. Lucky bird!

Picked it up with gloves and put it in a box and took it to be checked out by my vet who works with the Shasta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilittion Service.

We're going to release it next week, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it away. The adults have already started migrating south, but the young stay another two weeks or so before doing so.

Keep up the good work!

Lucky Bird! My Grandma, what big feet you have!

More photos in my album on page 6!

While sitting in the sand at Bethany Beach DE in early July we watched pelicans, osprey and dolphins all feeding on a school of fish at the same time. They put on quite a show for a few minutes.

Hey, I heard TyBoo Mike's new dog had a real attitude when it was a pup. Here's a photo
that's just crying for a caption.

"I peed in your sox, so what are ya gonna do about it, Old Man?"

This is Scooter....He's the Office Printer Cat. You should see him jump when the printer swings in to action....

And this is Snowball. Both Scooter and Snowball were Maine Rescue Cats.. And no, she has not "expired", just Resting

And meet the new members of our growing family, Kermit and Ms. Piggy. She's the one on the left and got her name quickly by displaying her eating habits (growls too). Both rescue kitties, born about the 4th of July (we think).

Thanks for sharing your furry family fotos, Captains Cat. And for taking them in and offering a life of kitty joy and discovery.

That's quite a loveable bunch o' four-leggers. Do the tiny tots keep you up at night?

This was just a scroll down memory lane, reading the first 11 pages...I still tear up thinking about Oscar.

Oscar_Cathlamet_2004.jpg

Thank heavens for Baxter, he is not Oscar but he fills a great big void. Everybody needs a dog that is so happy to see them when they come home that he does backflips! I do not of course expect Patty to do backflips, that would be a bit much... As everyone who knows him knows, Baxter is pretty much the perfect boat dog, and "Dog of the Desert."

Two pretty durn good Lhasas!

Darn right Pat, great dogs, both of them!! :love :dog :dog

Catman, the little ones sometimes find their way upstairs around 5AM or so, we're in our house in Downeast Maine right now so they have to climb the stairs. They're coming up on 12 weeks now, about 2 1/2 times the size when we got them! They have been renamed Bonnie and Clyde, more in keeping with their temprements.

Scooter, the striped tiger is now Uncle Scooter. If they walk by, he will trap them with a paw and wash them where they need it most. Not what I expected from a boycat but then, he's unusual!

The white one just tries to ignore them and the dog would like to play but can't figure out how!

If I do they would be paper. Also not handy to find at this time.
He was ugly as his head and paws where proportionally incorrect to the rest of his body.
Now he carries his belly like a badge of the good life.

While shopping yesterday with Joan and Steph, we passed a pet store in the mall. No, I didn't make any rash decisions... little Izzy has been a part of our family for one year now and is all the "critter" we need. But, there was one delightful little Yorkie that reminded me of Snack, the furry family member of Dave and Jan (the friends we made this summer on the Erie Canal). And one of my favorite photos of Izzy and Snack during their first "play date"...

Izzy have been distracted by the camera, but I am sure she is about to pounce on Snack.

Nahhhh, little Izzy and Snack are buddies. That first meeting was a bit tentative, but they did fine after that. I asked Izzy if she wanted a pet... you know, a dog that she could take for walks. "No, I have you at the other end of the leash. I don't know if I'd have the patience to train another one." 8)

Who said cats don't have a sense of humor?

The Yorkies are darn cute, and Snack may be the cutest of that breed that I've ever seen. It was fun looking. I still like to look at pretty young ladies, too, but that doesn't mean I want to bring one home.

Yeah, I know... the couch. :disgust
