Trip down the intercoastal waterway in a 22ft cruiser.

I am going down the intercoastal waterway from Norfolk to as far as I get in a month. Bill and El got me interested in the adventure lifestyle of C-Dory boating. My very good friend Charlie Vinroot took very good care of me in June when my wife had some health problems, which have since been resolved, which forced me to abort the June trip heading south. He was an angel, keeping my boat at his house for 4 months while I waited for the November part of my trip.
I am learning about this crowd and everthing is very positive. What a wonderful group.

I had an overheat on my Honda 90 engine 4 miles from Oriental NC and came in on my kicker. It was no problem to find a mechanic to fix the problem. I had a plastic bag over the water intake or a stuck thermostat so tomorrow off to Boufort NC This weather is better than the 4 below zero reported at my home town, Fairbanks Alaska.

Jack I like the schedule you have set "as far as I can get in a month." Thats definately the way to cruise no schedules to keep up with. Enjoy yourself and have a great trip. Hope you have a camera with you.

Jack (aka AKJACK [I like that  ]) is a very fine guest. We were glad to have him here both visits, wish he could have spent more time. I think he'll make it all the way to Jax before he has to head back and pick up his rig in Norfolk!

He does have a camera with him, Jack, take lots of Pix, they'll set up an album for you when you're ready! :photo

Good trip Jack, keep in touch! :D

BTW, if he does make it, Marvin on C-FLE has invited him to store his boat/rig at his house in N. Jax until he comes back in April to head further south! Thanks Marvin!! :thup :thup

Great Trip Jack! Awesome waters. Keep us posted. If you feel like coming inside a bit more and traveling in the Heartland water areas (TN, Cumberland, OH,MS river areas) in and around Cadiz, KY/Nashville TN prior to heading all the way back up north... drop me a note.

Jack,
It sounds as if you are off on an adventure. Not sure how far you will make it south, but if you make it all the way down to the Kennedy Space Center area, please give us a call. We live on the ICW across from mile marker 77 on central Merritt Island and would be glad to host you to a home cooked meal and a hot shower if you like. (We know how old a Sun shower off the swim deck can get!)

We purchased our 22' cruiser in late June from it's previous owner and to date, the farthest north we have had the time to travel is south Jax in late July...a week long trip that confirmed out love of the C-Dory. The ICW is truly a beautiful place to cruise.

Good Luck...Tad and Toby (321) 453-2467

To all,

I spent an extra day in Oriental because of a sinus infection, had to let the antibiotic work as I was very sick. Today was a nice 50 mile run for the first time with no spray over the top of the boat.

A comment on the C-Dory as a sick ward, I was as comfortable as I would have been at home. What a great little boat.

Thanks to all of you who offered support, a place to visit and a homecooked meal.

I sitting in the Extended Stay at the airport and wish I was with you. It's about zero now in Fairbanks, pretty warm for this time of year. While you are down there, you need to get over to Clarksville and see Byrdman. I grew up on the Cumberland River and for this time of year, hitting the Cumberland/Tennessee River system would be about the best you could ask for. Some reasonable fishing, some good bird hunting (ducks and geese) and some good white tail hunting on public land all from your boat.

Have a good trip. I may run into you down there somewhere.

All,

I got very sick yesterday going down the intercoastal, started losing my balance and got sick to my stomach, it was reaction to the medication that I am on to stop the sinus infection. My wife called and requested that I return a little early so I decided to return to Fairbanks a little early. Sometimes life gets in the way of a good adventure.

I learned several things on the trip.

The C-Dory is a wonderful boat to make the trip in.

The trip should be made with a good friend or your other half. It is much more fun with a companion.

Shore power was invaluable on those 40 degree nights, I used a small electric heater to keep warm

Drain your fuel filter every day.

You should have two engines, a kicker is essensial in case you have problems with the main.

Sure sorry the bug got you on the trip, Jack. But sounds like otherwise it was a great trip. Yep, folks have done a lot of chatting about having a dog or a cat along, but I'm with you -- there's nothing like a good companion to share the trip.

'Twas a good learning trip for you, as well -- those are good ideas you posted. Thanks for keeping us all posted -- have a good flight home.

Jack. Sorry to hear about your health. Tommorow is never guaranteed to any of us....so we better travel today!

Tom: Boat is in the water waiting brother, fly on down. Keep her tied in Cadiz, KY about MM59 on the Cumberland, close to the "big intersetions" that make up our wonderful Heartland waterways. Hope to see you in Jan in Seattle!

Great to have you down Tom! We depart on the 22nd so sure... Not sure which end of the river my boat will be... I keep going back and forth. Clarksville has a wonderful riverfront light display set up now so I feel sure at some point I will have her back down this way. Now, she is up river at Mom's... but either end is real handy from Nashville. Sent you my cell phone via PM. Let me know your flight schedule and if you need a ride from the airport.
