curtains

Has anyone a good suggestion for installing curtains in a 22' cruiser? I have tried the suction cup option, without good results. Are there any easy ways to do it without drilling? Thank you.

Most of the boats do as ssbol suggests. You can get a snap set tool which uses large square tip Vise Grips:

At Defender for about $20.

The cheapest is the $5 hammer set for the button/female at Home Depot:

I have a complete set of about 6 dies which go on the Vise Grip--but these are more than you need for just a few simple button/female snaps.

Avoid the cheap sheet metal pliers, with out any compound level action (as the Vise grips do) They just don't have enough force to get a good set.

I use the 3/8 size male and female "snaps". I have also put heavy duty velcro on both the cabin side above the window frame, and on the curtains. This will hold it up well in the middle. You can put another snap or to for that also. Be sure and put snaps on all bottom corners.

I poke the hole with a small soldering iron--It seals the edges better than a small hole punch. I also put a small square or circle of 8 oz Dacron to give a little more 'substance" to the set of the snap.

I recently bought 20 3/8" boat canvas snap caps, and the sockets in all stainless steel. Look at the reviews. There are some that are cheaper, but the reviews reveal that they are thin poor quality SS.

Defender has the full set: Visegrips, full set of setting dies, and 450 various snap fittings for about $75. I don't know the quality of fittings, but usually Defender has good quality. If you are going to start doing a lot of canvas work this is worth buying. I always keep a few extra snaps, cups, etc in the "spares kit", along with one of the cheap hammer die sets for emergency repairs when on the water.

I installed wooden strips w/ 5200. Then screwed plastic tracks from an RV supplier. More involved than just snaps, but they are truly curtains. Pic in my album.

The cover guy that made my curtains, used those RV channels. They were mounted with the screws already holding the window frames in. There is like a "rope" then that is sewed to the top of the curtains, and they slide in. Can be left in, or removed completely then. When left in, they can be rolled up from the bottom. The channels I am talking about, are a lot like those that many use to attach their biminis to the back of their roofs. For photos, go to my imbedded album for Midnight Flyer:

Velcro works great--on the walls, top and bottom of the windows, and on the curtains. White Velcro is virtually undetectable on the walls. Sew the Velcro to the curtains.

Check out a product called SNAD
This is a standard size snap stud that is plastic with adhesive.
I have used them on inside privacy curtains with 1/4" housetop thick fiberglass.
They stay on forever

No snaps. no Velcro, no cords and ahhhh ....... no Curtains.

I use automotive window shades, the reflective foil ones that have a spring wire hoop that the foil goes around and take a snap of the wrist to "fold". Get them at WalMart and they have a light side and a dark side so you can have the reflective side out and the inside dark or what ever. The whole set to do all the windows is about 3-4 inches high and about 8" in diameter. It takes one pair (set) to do 2 windows, takes a couple minutes to set up or take down, and has all kinds of adjustability.
