Damned Smokers

A couple of days ago I expressed my frustrations with the trailer brake manufacturing industry for their inability to make a trailer brake that would last longer than it takes to get them home. Well after assembling all the parts and fluids that I would need to do the job, I tore into it this morning. I discovered what caused my brake to lock up on me and fry everything. A cigarette filter got kicked up by the tire I assume and got lodged behind the pad on the piston side stopping the pad from retracting. Guess I owe the brake manufacturer an apology and vent at smokers instead.

Oh geez, who would have guessed that as a root cause for the problem?!

Back in the day, a friend of mine hitchhiked out to California from the Midwest. Along the way, a fellow in a pickup truck stopped to give him a lift. My buddy tossed his backpack/sleeping bag in the bed of the truck, and hopped into the cab. They headed down the highway. Driver was a smoker and had a cigarette as they were driving along. When he had finished he flipped the butt out the side window...

...Whereupon it circled around in the air currents, landed in the bed of the truck, and started my friend's gear on fire :cry :amgry

After a long day swimming at the river I was driving my 71 510 home with a couple of friends. One freind in the front seat was just getting done with his smoke and threw it out the window. Buddy in back was already asleep. He had been bragging all summer about his ability to grow a zztop type beard in just 4 month all summer. I don't know what was funnier, The look on his face or the girly scream he made when the the flaming beard woke him up, oh being we had been swimming he had no shirt on. :cry

My wife smokes, but I would not call her a Dammed Smoker.
I personally take ofence to your comment. Some folks can be so Dammed judgemental sometimes.

As a former public health administrator I should have simply provided the link to the facts gathered by the CDC. My comment was indeed inappropriate. Please accept my apology.

yes it was and your apology is sort of an un apology like politicians saying if I offended anyone Smoking is addictive to some and it is no help to be lectured with some report. what you need is some sensitivity training.

Marty
I am truly sorry you had to take flak over my topic title. You know in my book you are one of the best people that frequent this site. Again sorry.

A round of sensitivity training, all around... ...for those over-sensitive and those under-sensitive...

I usually do not get into discussions of this nature, but I have to say that of all the people I know Marty is the least in need of sensitivity training. He is one of my heros and I actually look to things he has said for implicit guidance when I find myself tempted to get into discussions of this nature.

I did "wonder" about the thread title, because yeah, I could see where the OP was feeling that way, after finding a cigarette filter stuck in his brakes; but I could also see where it might offend someone, because who wants to be damned.

On the other hand, Marty's apology seemed straightforward to me. He agree that he had caused offense, took responsibility for it, and apologized (without even pointing out that he's not the one who titled the thread).

PS: I find smoking and cigarettes/butts to be unpleasant, but I do have some very good friends who smoke. I like and care about them whether or not they smoke cigarettes.

Look, let's get one thing straight, as a former smoker who had the very unpleasant experiance of watching my father wither and die from lung cancer, and also have friends and family that still smoke my title was not meant to offend ANYONE. It was done more tounge in cheek than anything. When I disassembled my trailer brakes and discovered just what caused over $200 in damage I was more amazed at what caused it than who caused it. Nuff said on my part.

Definitely the last thing anyone would suspect -- I would have been incredulous as well :crook

(I'm sorry about your dad.)

I'm sorry but I cannot bite my tongue on this one. Marty is perhaps the nicest, sweetest person I've had the pleasure of meeting from this site. He made a sincere apology and doesn't deserve to be chastised in this way.

My mother was severely addicted to smoking and died from smoking-related disease 5 years ago but I took no offense from Spike's obviously tongue in cheek title. He was obviously frustrated that the cigarette butt caused his brake problems.

Two guys are in a boat with three cigarettes. They had no fire, so they threw one of the cigarettes overboard, and the entire boat became a cigarette lighter.

I will second Peter's comment about Marty. He's truly a nice guy, and one of the most thoughtful and sincere members of the CBrats I've met.

I was almost a three pack-a-day smoker in my early 20s, and I have no qualms about saying it is a hideous habit. Like Peter, I have had family members die from smoking related diseases. I would like to see tobacco taxed into oblivion. Prohibition proved we can't legislate morality, but we can sure tax the hell out of it.

Marty is aces in my book. "Damned" in the sense of "condemned to ill health and early death" is simply a fact, as Marty's link demonstrates. A very sad fact.
