Dealing with Chop

So I went out again today, and it continued to die. This time it died and then would not crank over at all... then a bit later it started up again... I am now starting to suspect electrical. Talked to the guys who worked on it and they said maybe the connections on the motor are loose, said it is sometimes a problem with the Honda's...IDK.

I only use Ethonal free fuel, but I think I am just going to replace all the fuel system hoses and bulbs anyway. My engine is a Honda 75 but this boat has never gone anywhere near 25-30 mph. I had a spun hub last fall, so I replaced with a 4 prop, that brought my rpms and speed way down too, I am going to change back to a three prop. 3 prop WOT, flat conditions top speed was about 22-23 around 6200 RPM (no I don't run the engine at full throttle regularly), 4 prop same conditions is 5200 RPM, 20-21 kts, but has a bit better hole shot and quicker response in and around docks/turning.. I think I am going to change back to 3 prop and keep the 4 prop as a spare. With the 3 prop I could cruise around 5200-5500 around 19-20 knots comfortably.

Hopefully these guys can finally get my engine running better... this will be the third time they have worked on it. Took it to them to get a 500 hr maintenance/overhaul and get it running tip top, but as of now it's worse than before I took it to them. Also, someone broke into my boat while stored on the trailer and stole some stuff, including a battery so I am worried they may have damaged... who know's what... which can be hard to track down... and they stole the head unit to my radar... which turns out is kind of expensive... not sure if I want to replace it.

But I did catch a nice black drum.... at the marina dock

louxwe,

I'm curious, is the diameter and pitch of the 3 and 4-blade props the same?

I've fooled with both 3 and 4-blade props, but I did not find anywhere near the difference btwn them as you did.

Sorry to hear about your boat being vandalized. If items were stolen (attached to your boat) on your boat while it was in for service, the shop is responsible for that. Hold the shop accountable. They will have insurance for the theft and any damage the perpetrators did to your boat. It is their responsibility to keep your boat safe and secure while they are working on it.

If you have a new battery because the other one was stolen, check the connections. The necessary cables for starting the motor may look like they are connected properly but they may not really be making a proper connection because of dirt or corrosion on the contact surfaces and also the battery connection nuts may not be tight enough. Gary.

I’m new to CDorys love this site I have a 23’ last summer first season with it.
(Had a 21 seaway before very different ride)
These hulls have many perks as spoke in Pryor posts one of them is not riding in chop. I found the pounding in chop ok and worth the benefits.
I experimented with trim tabs and in my case found that adjusting them to be putting the boat on a bit of a lean so the flat bottom doesn’t pound all at once helped the ride a lot.
I usually put the side that is getting the wind and spray up and that also helps keep the windows dry. Maybe give that a try along with other ideas posted here
Good Luck
Jim

Good article, and once again the comment about scuppers comes up. From what I've seen, our 25's with scuppers have more problem with them letting water in, than "bailing" it out. Perhaps if the cockpit floor and scupper drains were higher would help, but then that sort of defeats the purpose as well. Colby

Seems to me that they are flap type scuppers in lieu of ball type

Ball-check scuppers would be my go to I'm thinking

I recently replaced my gas hoses with the blue, non-ethanol ones including a new bulb. The old ones worked fine but it's just peace of mind knowing that everything is up to date.
