Desktop Linux

I have a Labtec WinFast GeForce2 MX64 (MX200) 32 meg video card. Highest resolution I can get is 1024x768.

The Bad News: You will find nothing other than generic, and quite frankly crappy drivers in Ubuntu for that card, as it's nVidia based. Neither nVidia nor ATI release specs for their cards, making it virtually impossible to create high quality open source drivers. Ubuntu, along with many other Linux distributions, will not include proprietary drivers in their base distribution.

The Good News: In the case of nVidia, excellent Linux drivers exist, they are just proprietary and you must fetch them from nVidia and install them manually. Also, with accelerated nVidia drivers installed, you should be able to use the Beryl desktop discussed earlier.

Here's the current nVidia supported hardware list, and your chipset is on it.

Here's a link to the driver download location at nVidia, along with installation instructions.

I can't help much more, as the nVidia installation on OpenSUSE has it's own set of peculiarities. However, I can pretty much assure you any additional assistance you need with nVidia driver installation has already been covered in the Ubuntu Forums.

Bill – thanks again for your help.

Tuesday night I was soo far into trying different things to increase the resolution and not making headway. I would go off on one tangent after another. Did learn more about the OS. Didn't get to bed until well past midnight and had to get up at 4 AM to go to The Dalles Mountain Farm. Got back late and saw your post but had already downloaded the drivers Tuesday night. Still was not able to increase the resolution and managed to loose video playing with the "xorg.conf" file.

More time on line and running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" got me back to 480x640. More tweaking and experimenting with the OS and about Midnight Wednesday I have 1600x1200 and 1280x1040 as well as the lower resolutions.

So this is my first post with a Linux computer.

I am a happy camper now and will really start getting under the hood.
