different ideas for tow vehicles

If you want a nice vehicle to tow with you might consider a Volkswagen Touareg. They have a diesel version that is supposedly rated to tow 7700 pounds as friend who has one reported. I have ridden in it and it a fine car. No trace of telltale diesel noise and no smell. A little pricey. Fuel mileage is 19 around town 28 highway.

Thanx Thataway. I'll check into Honda Pilots. I love the Hondas. I appreciate your comment about simple van + sports car. That may be the best way for me to go as I'd hate to give up my little roadster. :)

Thanks Foggy.

Love your signature quote: Never become really good at something you don't love to do.

I thought the same thing when I read that quote! inspirational!

Now I need to figure out how to pay my bills fishing and drinking beer. I love those things....oh and watching football too :smiled

I can actually contribute productively. I tow our 22 around with a 1-ton diesel pickup. Suspension is tough and bouncy, its uncomfortable and doesnt have any space to stow things inside. In truth, it's only use is towing the boat or taking loads to the garbage dump. Otherwise I prefer to drive a sedan. It does tow wonderfully, and gets reasonibly good mileage towing. I love it for what it is.

If I was only going to have one mult-use vehicle, it would most definately not be a fullsize 1 ton diesel like I have now. Maybe a cherokee like dustin's or a vw toureg. That's my $ .02

I'm very happy towing with my 2013 Toyota 4Runner. 60-65MPG on the freeways...

You should sell Toyota your secret for getting 60-65MPG out of a 4Runner. Then you could retire and have plenty of time for boating.

Dodge is going to hit the streets real soon with a half ton diesel truck. Would think that it would make a heck of a tow rig for a CD 22. Have seen some of the specs on it, but the tow weights was not one of them. But what I did see I liked.

Just curious what is your aversion to a truck? After dragging a CD-22 with a V-6 Ford Explorer for a few years and then getting a Chevy Suburban 2500 I had my "come to Jesus" moment and clearly see the advantages of a v-8 truck over a mid size SUV. Its rare people wish that their tow vehicle had less power and a weaker transmission. It is true that I don't brag about the gas milage but after thinking about my truck gets 3-4 times the gas milage as my C-Dory.

Good hunting
Chris

Keep the sports car its ok to have a couple of toys.

Thanks Chris. I never eat yellow snow...

I think a van or SUV might be more suitable for me as I have a dog, and may get another, and the van would give me secure storage for a dog crate, as well as groceries and other stuff, and with the amount of winter rain we have up here, I'd have to get a canopy to keep everything dry. Also, a camperized van might be very nice as shoreside accommodation. But I can sure see the advantage of a truck for pure pulling power.

The Jeep Cherokee has the same 3.0 L diesel and has a rated tow capacity of 7400 lbs. So there is going to be a series of vehicles with this Italian made (Fiat) Diesel. The Italians have been making diesel engines for a long time, we just don't see them here in the USA.

There is a more than a rumor that the Titan is going to have a 5L Cummins diesel.

My spys tell me that Dodge diesel truck will have the same 240 HP/400+ft lbs of torque diesel engine that will be in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and VW Toureg. They are all rated tow 7400 - 7700 lbs. An added 'Plus': when you're not towing, they're supposed to get 29 MPG Hwy.

Aye.

We towed a lot with our 190 Roadtrek Class B motorhome. The Roadtrek is on a one ton chassis, with a 6.0 V-8. It did the towing very well and we still use it every winter. We live in it for 3 months each year. Use paper plates ect. in the motorhome and leave everything in the boat ready to cruise.

Or instead of waiting for the latest and greatest rice truck or small dodge with a small diesel, you can pick up a 6 year old Dodge 2500 with 600 ft lbs. of torque for two thirds the price with 400,000 miles left on the engine. And get 21 mpg to boot. And 15 MPG while towing the C-dory.

Your comment on the rain and carrying stuff around in a van versus a truck is right on. I've always used a fiberglass cap or tonneau because of that. However with the truck, one suddenly realizes all of the BIG stuff that you find needs hauling around that really requires an open truck bed. For example, the motorcycle or 4 wheeler bug could hit you, or how about your aunt fannies fridge or if you have kids, moving their households around year after year, etc. etc.

A quad cab truck with the short bed has a whole lot of room in the back seat area. Most of the back seats fold up and leave a very large flat area inside for all of the stuff my wife and I carry for a month away even when we aren't towing the boat.

Lots to think about, but trucks tow, all other vehicle forms compromise too far to creature comfort...in my opinion.
