Katy and I recently acquired an old Achilles 8.5, red and black dinghy from a guy that got it with his trawler. It has never been registered in CA. We bought it and received a hand written receipt, but no Cert. of Origin, long lost since the boat is a 1987.

How do we get CF numbers, required since we'll put a 2.0 Honda on it.

We replaced the floors with new varnished plywood. It reminds me of the old Ford woody station wagons. We may not have won the Dinghy Race at Catalina, but we would have perhaps been "Most Nostalgic".

Can you avoid registration if the dinghy is used exclusively as a tender to your main boat in CA?

I've had that problem with old boats/trailers too. Found that the best way to do it is to list it as "homebuilt". At least in VA, they'll give you a new registration on that basis, even a title if it needs one.

No. Hang an engine, any engine - even battery powered, and Ahnold wants his vigorish.

I registered a Sea Eagle a few years back in CA and though it had a Certificate of Origin, I learned CA has a little paperwork drill if it's missing. Check with DMV. Sometimes it takes a bit to get the one person in an entire office that knows how, unfortunately.

Thanks, all, for the input.

It looks like the trip to DMV is inevitable. I'll wait till after the weekend.
