Dinghy Rack

Just got done rough fitting a dinghy rack for the c-daisy. Thought I would throw up a couple pics to share. Still waiting for the dinghy to be completed.

The tubes are all 1inch heavy wall stainless. They don't bend when I stand on them but they surely would if I was to bounce up and down on them. There is another fitting I can use in the middle if flexing becomes an issue.

The elbows are from marinepartsdepot.com and are good quality for the price. The Mako saddles and Hully Rollers as well as the Taylor Made rail sockets were all bought off ebay. All in all its pretty sturdy so I think it will handle the 128 lbs load.

The keel is much taller than it looks so plan on moving the saddles closer together and also start thinking of ways to raise them higher for clearance. The rollers may work well but again the height will be a factor. Just let me know if I can save you any pain. Do you have the dink on site yet for measurements?
 
Thanks for the info Greg. I'm going to call David at Pudgy tomorrow and see where we are at. Should have the boat in the next two or three weeks. Maybe we could make a run toward Port Orchard and see what will work?

A pudgy weighs in at 128lbs. For now the plan is,just like the inflatable, to bring it up over the side of the bow. If that proves to difficult we'll go with a garhauer lifting davit. Already made a mounting bracket out of 3/8" stainless angle iron(316) so we can mount a garhauer high enough to lift the pudgy off the rack.

I may need to copy the rack, at least one section, for use as the bow mount for my inflatable. Do you have a parts list? I am looking at only needing one cross bar because the other cross bar is going to be part of an arch system that will come up from the splash well.

Thanks for the compliment. Assuming I can avoid a hernia getting it up there it should work well for us. The Portland Pudgy is a great tender. Not really concerned about the extra weight as we have had alot more than that up there. I'm trying to picture what you have in mind, do you have a sketch?

I got the parts from a few different places.
The rail sockets are produced by Taylor Made products. They make them in two sizes. The ones I used are for 7/8"-1" rails and accept a 1" rail out the top end. They are actually flagpole mounts. The tubing is all 1" heavy wall stainless (1/16" wall thickness). The elbows are also 1" stainless. Lastly, the Yakima Hully Rollers and Mako Saddles were purchased from ebay.

I Wanted the rack to be easily removable so we could still use our mooring cover without modifying it.

Well,
we were able to get it up on top but, it just isn't going to work with the garhauer. So the garhauer will be deployed as the kicker lift between the C-dory and the Pudgy. And the Pudgy will be towed for now.

Wow! If you do keep it up there, make sure the drain plug is out in any kind of rain storm! If not, that'll be one hexx of a lot of high weight! :disgust

Charlie, The Portland Pudy is self bailing so he can leave the plug out all the time. WOW, it sure looks big on top of the 22 though doesn't it?

Cool. but it sure looks B I G up there. Hope to see you guys at Sequim CBGT next week. My rack is half done, the aft half :D and the Wolvarine is up there now.

Greg was right, the pudgy is a BIG 128lbs. Don't think we can make it practical to carry the pudgy on top but we'll use the rack for a couple of kayaks at a later date. We will be happily be towing the pudgy.

Hi Bob,

Simply the elevation needed to use the stock garhauer lift put too much torque on the chosen mounting point. The result was flexing on the side of the cabin that surprisingly didn't break a window. The garhauer can lift the pudgy no problem. I just like to do. Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't.

Karl,

Wolverine; a scrappy stripped, overgrown badger type critter that has a bad reputation. Also a Jim King copy of an Alaskan inflatable, same specs, but Korean mfg, and not so cool Q&A issues. :oops:

Towing works just fine Karl, We are towing nearly the whole time up north right now and as long as you don't leave a 40lb outboard on the transom and a 60lb battery in the boat at high speeds it works great. Not so great yesterday with that load and the pudgy has some marks to show for it. We left the normal internal load of goods plus the electric trolling motor on it today and towed 20 miles up Johnstone straight plus another 26 up to kwatsi and it just followed happily along at 0-20 knots.
