Distance/Time tables

We all have a rough idea of how long it takes us to get to certain locations but would have to get out the charts and do time/distance calculations for more unfamiliar trips. Instead of doing that case-by-case on the water I decided to create tables we could consult to make things easier. I am posting some here to get the ball rolling in hopes they will be helpful and that others will do the same thing in other areas.

The following tables were made the old fashioned way, with dividers and charts and are based on a generally direct route with a cruising speed of 14Kts. They are rounded off somewhat because, as we all know, weather, etc. makes precise calculations pretty hard.

This table uses Cornet Bay as the starting point:

Destination Distance Time@14Kts

Friday Harbor 22 1:30
Lopez Pass 9 :40
Thatcher Pass 11 :50
Cattle Pass 14 1:00
Lime Kiln Lighthouse 23 1:45

Oak Harbor 16 1:15

I'll post tables from other locations in separate posts. I hope folks find this helpful and add to it.

Fascinating 8)

Since you started this, how about publishing it in the format seen at the back of road maps where you pick your start point then read down to your destination and it gives you the answer??

Great idea as a handy ready-reckoner when plans chance (as if)

Cheers :beer

Merv,

I'd be happy to do that if I could figure out how to make the computer elves create and preserve that format. I'm somewhat bits/bytes challenged. Maybe one of the nerds can explain how to do it.

Barry,

Being a proponent of the KISS priciplem that is one of those things that is probably done much more simply by typing the numbers into a table rather than have a bunch of nerds playing with their elves

ie. list aphabetically in horizontal and vertical axes (can use an Excel spreadsheet) and simply type in the numbers at the intersections.

  M

Agreed but,

The next question is: can I post an Excel spreadsheet here?? And, my recollection is those tables account for a single variable: distance or time not both. My algebra is decades old and weak to begin with but I seem to recall solving for more than one variable is a wee bit hard :D

Barry,

You can put anything you like in there if you designate it as text.

ie 18 / 1.2 meaning 18 miles and 1.2 hours in one cell.

As for posting it on here, that is truly one for the Elves. You could always offer it as an e-mail attachment.

I suspect you could even publish a set of waypoints etc that one could upload but you would have to declare that they were not to be used for navigation :wink

M

Merv,

I'll give it a try offline and see what I can do. (It would be a lot easier if you came over and kept me supplied with beer so my brain doesn't overheat! ):D

Barry,
Did you notice the neat little trick at the end of that file? You can download it in excel format so you can print it or have it available on your laptop/i-phone etc without need for internet connection.
(I only saw this after I hacked it into an excel file  for my own use)

Some people out there with a lot of spare time

down load the exel file, i just did and you can type in any speed you want. I just put in 20 and it changed all the times automatically. What a great tool. three cheers for the nerds and their elves.
