Door lock question

I have the simplest solution: replace the lock!

I comtacted the factory and Jeff and got a new one, gratis.

Simple to install, works like a charm and the old keys fit the new lock; now we have four keys for our boat. Actually, we probably have four keys for YOUR boat, too!

I used to have an old camper with a flimsy door that any 12 year old could have jimmied. I found a target with a human head & torso figure that fit in the window and poked a nice pattern of .44 holes into it. Not only was the camper never messed with but tailgaters left me alone also!

Except for that trucker on I-5...

I read your post last month. Hope the boat is on the mend.

That's a good one MH, one could also blow up the glamor Pic of Joe posted further up this thread and hang it in the window :)

The "Sea Wolf Joe" through bolt treatment on the hinges sure helped with our boat. The screws for the door hinges would loosen and the door wouldn't completly shut and lock.

Extra keys- I spent about an hour at the local lock shop as the two folks running took it as personel challenge to make some duplicate keys. They where going through all their key blanks and examining them and discussing modifications...it was a good chunk of an hour that they worked on it, I felt guilty about what they charged me considering the work that went into it....for what it's worth, they ended up using a MBL 1R (it looks like R, could be an A) Silca blank

I like Sea Wolf, Joe’s deterrent. I believe he has this Photo_2.thumb.jpg on his C-Dory door. You can see a larger version by clicking on it. The caption under it says "Welcome To My C-Dory You ____"

Hey B~C

Besides the through bolts (machine screws) and lock improvements, I remember you said you had added a 1-1/8" cam lock to your door last year.

Having read your post, I did the same, and it works great!

With both locks working, the door's pretty secure.

Adding any more hardware won't really stop a serious intruder as they're coming in via a crowbar or brick anyway, and a bigger lock simply means bigger collateral damage.

Then, if we're home, we send them the Riot Gun Welcome Aboard Salute!

Joe.

hey there, ya, the extra lock ads some cheap piece of mind, but like you say, it won't deter the serious thief. That's why I also install the LSJAP in the boat when we're away...Life Sized Joe Action Pic :)

I know this is an old thread, but if anyone else is reading it to figure out how to fix their door that won't lock, I thought I would add my two cents worth.

I have had the boat for a year and the door never locked. The mechanism seemed to work when the door was open, but not when it was closed.

I tried using the dremel to make the opening for the lock bigger, but that didn't help.

I had tried adjusting the screws, but the bottom screws were really loose and wouldn't stay adjusted.

I through bolted the hinges and miraculously the door now locks. I wish I had known it would be that simple.

I was looking for a much more complicated answer.
