Doryman's Meanderings

Nice fish my friend!!!! We really liked the fishing around sooke. we may go back there soon.
Sorry to hear about your crab pots but thats the way it is some times. To bad you did not have them at sooke , you can crab right off the dock.

You should have called me about the dog. we would have gotten him for you. I could have ran him thru my dogg boot camp for uncontrollable k-9's and he would have kept shadow busy. Next time call me.

Well, to the best of my knowledge, all your other stories have checked out. Victoria is one of our favorites, too... great city, wonderful inner harbour marina!

Best wishes,
Jim

I'm back home from the hospital now. Surgery went pretty well, about 6 hours under I think -- longer than the 4.5 hours anticipated because I have more than the usual amount of muscle in the area above the cochlea that the surgeon had to deal with. And no, it is not because I have a fat head! Not a lot of pain but nausea that comes in waves, probably due to all the meds they gave me for pain, antibiotics, stuff to get my insides moving again, etc. My appetite is OK, but I sleep a lot. I've got a pressure bandage on my incisions -- two big gauze pads above and behind my ears held in place by gauze wrapped around my skull. Think WWII aviator helmet or Princes Leia headphones and you will get the idea.

My in-laws were here for the week prior so on Sunday we dropped Ike off with Tom and Susan (thanks again, guys!) and then we took the in-laws to the airport. After that we went down to Chandler's Cove to check out a DeFever 46 and a Willard 40. Loved the DeFever, so maybe someday... Ran into Jeff Messemer from Ranger Tugs, who was taking a break from setting up for the boat show later this week to have lunch with his family. It is good to see how well Ranger is doing in this environment.

We got a room at the Courtyard across from Chandler's. Got up at 6 AM and were at UW by 7. Didn't get into the OR until at least 10 AM. Lori spent Monday night at the hotel then picked me up Tuesday and we were on the road to Anacortes by noon.

I go back to UW next Tuesday to see the surgeon for post-op follow-up and then the following Monday back again to see the audiologist to activate the implants for the first time!

Warren, thank you for posting about your surgery. I'm excited for you and am anxiously awaiting to hear about the outcome after your appointment with the audiologist.

Warren,

Great news :thup Did you have one or both done?
We were just talking about you guys last weekend as we visited with a Ranger tug called Lauri Ann. I think you know them too.

Good luck with the "power-up" and don't worry if you hear "voices" just as long as they haven't programmed in your MMSI #.

I had both done and now that I am going through the post-op recovery I am very glad the insurance co. let me get both together so I only have to recover once.

Never heard of the Lauri Ann. Where is their home port?

Wow, my own personal implanted MMSI :!: :!: :!: That would be a trip and a half.

Warren,

Thanks for the update, and glad you are doing well. We missed you and Lori at Sequim Bay SP CBGT. Hope the healing goes along better than ever. We will be anxiously awaiting the power up news too. Oh, and that head muscle..., comes from all that brain work. Glad to see you back on the site.

Got my pressure bandages off this afternoon and got to see what the surgeon did. Feels so good to have the bandage off, and the incision is not hurting much at all. I have about 4" vertical incisions immediately behind each ear, held together with about 16 stitches on each side. I can shampoo my hair now, just need to keep applying Neosporin. The effects of the anesthetic are definitely the worst part of it, but that is going away slowly.

Warren-

So glad to hear your surgery went well and we hope the prognosis is good and the final outcome is fully positive and your hearing is restored as much as possible.

Will be looking forward to seeing you at a near future C-Brat get together!

Cheers!

Man oh man Warren - this has been neat to read. I'm feeling pretty happy for you. It has to be very exciting.

Thank you so much for thinking us to be a close enough part of your family to share all of this. That's a good feeling, too.

Mike

Update: I spent almost 3 hours with the audiologist yesterday. Much of the time was spent dealing with mechanical issues (see below). Over the last 24 hours it feels like I have been waiting for my brain to catch up with my implant.

When my implant was first activated, all I heard was what sounded like large, sharp bells whenever my processor transmitted a sound to the implant. Over the past 24 hours, my brain has started to subconsciously substitute more sounds like I was used to hearing with my hearing aids for those bell-like sounds. Also, I am hearing softer sounds because last night I turned up the volume (which makes the bell sounds and my own voice more uncomfortably louder). I could not hear my wife's voice yesterday (although I could hear the audiologist) but I could hear more of her voice this morning.

For those of you unfamiliar with implants, the surgeon opens up the skin and muscle above the ear and creates a depression in the bone for a magnet to rest. The magnet is connected to some circuitry, which in turn is connected to an array of electrodes that is inserted in the outer (higher frequency receptors) area of the cochlea.

The processor, which looks like a hearing aid, is attached to another magnet by a cord. The outer magnet is placed on the skin above the implanted magnet, and a communication channel is established by the circuitry in both internal and external devices.

The biggest frustration I have right now is that on my left implant, the swelling has not gone down enough to permit the two magnets to create a secure connection. Thus, I am only able to use my right implant.

Even with my hearing aids, I still have this problem....or at least that is what my wife says....

(I've recently noticed that my wife will ask me to do something and since I hear what she is saying I no longer say "huh?", (nor do I acknowledge what she said), then she'll repeat it and I'll say "yes, I heard you the first time", she'll say, "well I never know if you've got your hearing aids on and can hear me").

Warren, thank you again for sharing this information with us as I am certainly hoping for the best for you and was wondering this morning how things were going for you.
