Down the Tenn Tom Adventure

It works now. Great photos and blog. See you in a couple of weeks ?

The TomBigbee water way is a relatively new canal system. It was built for commercial traffic to bypass the somewhat difficult lower Mississippi especially during either high or low water events. The Tom Bigbee waterway has locks to control the water level and flow. The Mississippi has no locks beyond the confluence of the Illinois River, near Alton. This means it is free flowing, with no marinas or fuel docks for recreational craft, except on side rivers backwaters, or oxbows.

The historical towns were built along the Mississippi river because it was the main route North and South during the eras before the automobile and truck. The railroads also were the early East West routes of commerce. Both the River and the railroads were very strategically important during the Civil War.
