Editing posts

There was some abuse of editing a few months--probably over a year ago--and the limit put in place. The administrators may give more details. You sort of had to be there to see the problems...

@C-

Long story short:

Some political discussions got out of hand, and we had a debate on whether to ban political and controversial topics that violated the "just be nice rule".

A few members got pretty upset over the restrictions imposed by others, and one person decided to drop out and to erase (totally edit out) all his contributions (posts) from the very first day he joined the group.

This left some obvious gaps in the continuity of the threads involved., so the 30 minute edit limit was imposed to stop this type of reaction of a displeased member.

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks Joe and Bob. I had no idea.
Seems to make sense now. I was just wondering.
Have to be extra careful to check myself before hitting send.

If you go back and look at some of the old threads, you can see the gaps. Too bad, we miss him but all the same, it was a pretty inconsiderate thing to do.

Not a problem, just hit "Preview" and take a good look at a post before sending it.

I usually go back and look it over myself 10-15 minutes after posting to see if there are any errors I missed in the Preview.

It's also a very good idea to test out and find any bad url links or photos that don't show, which is an error I made yesterday, myself, when in a hurry.

One other thing:

The posts regarding a Boat for Sale cannot be edited at all, once sent. This is to prevent someone from promising one thing in the first posting, then changing the deal/description (proposed sale contract, really) later, which would amount to fraud (purposeful misrepresentation). So when commenting on a boat for sale ad, what you send is what you're stuck with..... no editing, period!

Another thought for anyone having difficulty with -

editing,

spelling,

word usage,

grammar,

punctuation,

controversial topics- not sure if you want to post something or not

etc.

Write your post in the normal way in the reply window, then

copy the post on the clipboard, then

open another window, and

copy the post on your favorite word processor, and go over it until you're satisfied it's OK, then

If you're sure you want to post it, go back to the original "reply" window, erase the original, and replace it with the edited version, "Preview" it, and hit "Send".

If you not sure you want to post the reply, save it on the world processor, think about it for a few hours or a day or so, then decide what to do. (Send, edit, or forget about it.) This last part can avoid getting yourself it hot water when over-reacting to someone else's post, opinion, etc.

I've found some of this out the hard way, so I'll offer it to everyone and try to take my own advice as well!

On a similar note, PLEASE POST YOUR NEW TOPICS IN AN APPROPRIATE FORUM!

There are plenty of C-Dory, Ranger, boating, and fishing specific forums on this site. For the miscellaneous boating posts that just don't fit a specific topic or apply to SOB (some Other Brand) boats, there's Chat. For the obvious off boating - off fishing - off beat and oft cantankerous, there's the forum "That's Life."

Makes it a lot easier to search out later or avoid if you wish.

While we're on this, I know that now and then I have had second thoughts about a post within the 30 minutes but couldn't DELETE it. I have no problem with the time limit, but THE AUTHOR should have the ability to remove something he posted in haste.

It's the deletions that were the problem. I think that the inability to delete something posted in haste is good incentive to not post in haste. Also, once one does and can't delete it, the guilty feeling that ensues reinforces the don't post in haste incentive. Overall, I like the no deletion rule.

I would agree with you!

I know the "X" (delete) function appears some places, but not others.

I know and understand it not being available in the boat ads, but don't know why it sometimes is present, and sometimes not on other topics.

You can, of course, substitute "Deleted by Author" within the 30 minute period, but the "X" would be a little cleaner.

I even sometimes pass on commenting on things because they are are complex or controversial, and it would take too long to explain everything and all the possibilities just to cover my a__, because I know there are a few folks out there that are all to happy and gleeful to find out that I've left some possibility or detail out, and are looking for a chance to point out an omission or error.

Joe.

On Edit:

This is why I largely stay out of the political discussions. Very few people change their or anyone else's minds, most of the discussion is shallow, few persons really are open to honest academic give and take, emotional baggage and pre-conceived ideas dominate, and hard feelings are a common outcome.

IMO the 30 minute rule is an overreaction to an unfortunate past event. Any number of times I have looked at a previous post and seen how I could change it to improve clarity or spelling.
Let's have a politics-religion forum for those who must talk about those things. We will enforce the "Just be nice" rule, state your case and move on, no bickering. We can then decree all other forums free of these hot button issues.

I'm all for it!

On The Hull Truth, they call it

The Bilge

and it gets pretty down and dirty!

But some folks seem to crave it!

What could we call ours?

The Exhaust Port?

Joe.

Post in haste, repent at your leisure, as they say!

This is a tricky issue...my thoughts below, not to be taken as anything "official"...

At first look, letting folks edit posts for clarity or to fix a mistake, sounds innocent enough.

On the other hand, whether by accident or intentionally, deleting/editing content that is an integral part of a discussion has many potential downsides. People reply to posts, taking into account context of previous messages, as well as the exact words that were written. Allowing somebody to edit posts that have been replied to, can remove or alter such context or content. This is simply unfair to people who have replied - their post was made within a certain context, which is now missing.

In the case of an "oops" or need for clarification, what's wrong with a follow up post?

In the case of regretting a particular post after making it, we'll certainly deal with things on a case-by-case basis. If you post something you have second thoughts about, simply drop Mike or me a PM - we'll listen. I've deleted/modified posts on occasion when such requests come in, although they are far and few between.

Me...if I regret something I post, I simply follow up and say so. What's wrong with an occasional public mea culpa? We all screw up from time to time...so what?
