Has anyone used the newer Suzuki EFI outboards as kickers yet? I'd love to get some feedback on how you like them, or how they might compare to other non-EFI 4-stroke kicker motors. Thanks, Mike.
The smallest size is the 15hp version at the following listed weights.
Manual start short shaft: 97lbs
Electric start short shaft:106lbs
Manual start long shaft: 108lbs
These are larger than your average C-dory would use for a second motor but not really heavier than some of the 10hp units used on some 25s or even some 22s. If they could bring the power down to 6-8hp and drop 20-40 lbs on these they might be a better fit.
If you want to avoid fuel clogging issues you can always give the Lehr propane outboards a try. I plan to use a Torqeedo for my next C-dory auxiliary.
They don't even have it on the marine site yet. It looks like it only comes in the remote electric start/tilt version at 113 lbs for now and it is also based on the same motor as the 15 and 20 so no weight penalty for moving up the line in power.
I was just wondering if Santa Claus had brought you one of these new EFI Suzuki portables. I noticed that the 9.9 also had EFI and remote controls.? If that would be important
I'm bringing this thread up again as I'm getting the itch to get the EFI Suzuki 15. I currently have the 9.9 Honda which is under 100 lbs. but if I get the Suzuki and want power tilt, that's 113 lbs. I don't know about all that weight. What do you think?
I have been looking at the Suzuki 15 EFI for a while now. plan on getting one for the 14 ft Lund we use for crabbing. I have a 9.9 Suzuki now that is electric start but I am trying to move away from carburetors. so I will move the electric start to the Sensei to take the place of the 9.9 rope start that is currently on her.
More weight astern is probably not a great thing on any 22, but specifically it probably depends on the individual boat and how you have things rigged. My 22 came with a Honda 8 that was over 100#. It was mounted to starboard. My boat always had a starboard list, no matter how much I tried to move weight to port. This could be somewhat compensated for underway by use of the trim tabs (although even with a friend who weighs about twice as much as I do sitting on port side, I still had to use trim tabs to "lean" the boat to port). But of course trim tabs don't help at anchor. I really got tired of seeing my boat listing at anchor, plus the v-berth sloping to starboard!
Last summer I changed the Honda 8 for a Merc 5 that weighs around 45#. That completely solved the listing problem. Ahhh.
If your kicker is mounted to port, or if your boat has more heavy things mounted to port (batteries or etc.) it may not matter as much.
