Factory steering wheel

Hi there

I'm looking to buy a smaller steering wheel for my boat. I was wondering if anyone knows what brand steering wheels c dory was putting on there stock boats? It looks like its about 14" so a 13.5" wheel would not save me much on the leg room. But some time maunfactors will cheat and say something is 15" when it's really only 14". So I'm wondering if maybe a 13.5" wheel might really be 12.5" and save me a bit after all? Some wheels have more dish on them so I wonder if the diameter is measured before its dished or when it's complete.

Thanks

They probably used whatever would be available. I'd measure the one you have, shop around and get a smaller one. When you do, call the new mfr and ask for a true diameter to make sure you really gain an advantage.

If you have steering that has "feedback" (takes effort to turn), you should also consider a knob (aka 'suicide knob') to help you with the extra effort it will take you to turn the smaller wheel.

I use the "necking knob" "suicide knob" for rapid turns, as when docking, rather than increasing force. The wheel diameter is measured as the wheel is ready for going to the boat- A "dished" wheel rim, does not change in size. The dishing refers to the way the spokes are formed.

A steering knob is now on my "absolutely" list. After a trip without one, I could sure see where it would come in super handy for things like turning around at the end of a narrow channel, docking, etc. Now I'm just trying to decide whether to get a separate knob to put on the existing wheel, or a smaller-wheel-with-knob. I think if I were keeping the cable steering I'd probably stay with the (relatively huge) stock wheel; but if I go to hydraulic steering it seems as though a smaller wheel might be nice (and workable). Either way, a steering knob will be included!

Question about the Wedge. I looked at the photos in the album but got confused with the measurements. How much do you think it raised the lower rim of the wheel? Or another way to ask: How much additional space between the seat and the wheel?

Bold in quote is mine. Not to side track this ..... but ...... no need for a suicide knob  Just upgrade to twins   NOT

Sorry all. been too long since I have been here.

Well, I guess there is a way to make the Edson knob look cheap :wink

I have twins and love and use my overpriced Edson knob a lot.

I agree the Edson knob looks nice, and I don't typically mind spending more for good quality -- I was mostly just ribbing Sleepy-C :D

Ribbing right back

Every steering wheel should have a center position marker. Just that you have choices what you use it for

I don't have hydraulic steering yet, but I have a feeling that when that is added a center position mark would change around "at will,"... wouldn't it? (As opposed to now with the cable steering where the top/center stays the same.)

Nothing left for it but to install twins, clearly.
