FAQ's - take twelve

Hate to be such a flake on this, but hey...nobody's payin' me around here.

Also, I was having a tough time with the current concept - I just don't like it. It's just too much of a manual process, and I'd rather have something a little easier to manage and automated. Here's my latest thought...

There's an add-on I could put in place, called QTE - Quick Title Edition. Here's a link to the MOD at phpBB, which describes it a bit more, and has links to numerous screen shots of it in action. Below are two of the screen shots, showing the forum and topic view of a topic that has been tweaked by the mod:

Basically, we create a set of pre-defined Quick Titles available to moderators, that can be applied to any topic. Now...there are a gazillion uses for a MOD like this, but it's use as a FAQ tool immediately jumped to mind.

First, we decide on FAQ categories. For the sake of consistency, it makes sense to have a category matching every technical forum we have.

Next, I create a Quick Title entry for each of these categories. For example, in place of the green text above, one might see [FAQ: Electronics]. Warren (or any any moderator) can then apply this Quick Title to any electronics topic worthy of being in the FAQ.

Next, I build a FAQ page. Unlike our previous plans, it is not routinely maintained - it is dynamically generated, building each FAQ section based on the Quick Title sections and topics that have been flagged. Should be pretty easy, as all of the Quick Title data is in the database.

This will take me a bit to get to, but it seems much more automatic and easier to maintain than our previous plans. That, and we can have multiple folks manning the FAQ, without stepping on each others' work.

I'll try and get the MOD installed on a test C-Brat site within the next couple weeks, and provide a pointer once ready. Assuming the MOD works as expected, and we like what we see, I'll get to coding the FAQ page.

I never saw this before -- wow. Any interest in resurrecting this after the system is migrated? Or will the new system have better tools for searching? I think that automated tools can only go so far -- English has so many words with multiple meanings depending on context that it really does pay to have a human-generated index.

The mod you show sounds good, from the little I know about it and phpBB.

Warren
