Fishtales Decommissioning

There has been some rumors flying around concerning some problems with Fishtales, a 2002 model CD 22 Cruiser--- true.
I have always noticed considerable flexing of the hull. When we would hit a wake or come off a wave, the hull would flex so much that we would get a rush of air coming out of the v-berth area.
Summer of 2005 I returned the boat back to the Factory to have them repair the excessive stress cracks and to install a Wallas.
I talked with Jeff concerning the stress cracks and the flexing of the hull.
He said that these were the worst that he has seen, but could not explain the reasoning for them.
Last August, when we returned from the Catalina Cruise, we noticed water seeping from below the chines. I called Bob Nahm, Catalina Yacht Anchorage- Dealer, and had him look at the boat. They took the boat in and ground into the chines- both chines were hollow full length. Bob sent pictures up to Scot. Scot told them to perform the required repairs.
After the repairs were complete, we took the group on the Santa Barbara Seafood Festival Cruise in October.
When we got back I noticed water seeping from the same areas. I called Bob to come look- Bob said we have worse trouble then we thought.
Again they ground into the hull- the hull was delaminated. The boatyard cut a section out of the hull and sent it up to Scot. Scot told Bob to give me a new boat- no hesitation.
For the past few months we have been going back and forth with the factory on the details of the replacement. I preferred the wooden cabinets that we had in Fishtales, but told Scot we would accept the molded interior. Ricardo said we can have the wooden interior.
With the new boat, C-Hawk- 2008 CD 22 Cruiser, we will be installing a single Honda 90 EFI and a few extra items, these extra items I will be paying for.
The factory is honoring the warranty and standing behind their product.

Many thanks to Bob Nahm, of Catalina Yacht Anchorage. He did not sell us the boat, but he stepped up to the plate to handle the repairs and eventually the replacement negotiations.

Many thanks to Scot for honoring the warranty-- we love these boats.

Many thanks to Ricardo for stepping in and expediting the negotiations.

As the owner of a relatively new 22 angler, my 2nd 22' C-Dory, it's great news to learn that the factory continues to stand firmly behind its product. Anyone can make a mistake but character is demonstrated by taking responsibility. All my past warranty interactions with the factory and with EQ on the new boat have been positive. I will personally thank Scot for this when I see him at the SBS. Later, Mike.

Roger, Congratulations on choosing a fine quality boat, and manufacturing company. It's sad to hear that a mistake was made and you got stuck with dealing with it, but it sure is good to hear that it all comes out in the (prop) wash. Goes to show that there are still people in the business world who care about their customers and their products. Most of all, glad nothing bad happened while you were out on the water.

PS. So now, what happens to "Fishtales"?

I wonder if he was the second (or third) owner of the boat if the boat would have still been replaced? Or if the boat was 3-5 years older? What is the hull officially warrantied for? Transferable? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this worked out. But I'm considering used boats as well. C.W.

According to the C-Dory literature, the hull warranty is 5 years; I've not seen anything that says whether it is transferable or not.

So will we ever know the "hole" truth about what was going on? Is "fishtales" going back to live at the factory now? Are we going to get to hear the rest of the story? Thanks for not keeping it a secret.

I talked with Scot at the Boat Show on Friday concerning the time frame for the replacement.
We have vacation time scheduled for the Delta Cruise and have made reservations.
I told Scot that we need the boat delivered and fully commissioned in time for the cruise.
Scot said that we could get the boat in 8 weeks- the clock is ticking.
We were supposed to meet with Ricardo and sign papers Saturday night, but Ricardo did not want to. He said that the agreement was finalized through our email transactions. (The Dealer and I have copies of all emails in our files)
After the decommissioning of Fishtales and the commissioning of C-Hawk, Fishtales will be shipped back to the factory so they can investigate what went wrong.

Roger, I am glad that Scot and Ricardo assured you last night that C-Hawk would be in the construction phase and ready to you in eight weeks as I remember that you had had Fishtales in the factory for "hull concerns" when you were in the San Juans a couple of years ago. It is always great to "hear" that the factory is going to stand behind their product as we've all invested a considerable amount of $ in these fine vessels and know that on rare occasions an ugly defect can appear.

in response to satisfaction's question regarding second, or subsequent owners.
c-dory stated to me, the hull warranty only extends coverage to the original owner. end of discussion.
would they have replaced the boat for a second owner, i think not. they may have discounted the replacement boat, but i my opinion that would have been the extent of it.
pat
ps: i never yell!

While the QC problem is disturbing, it's great to read they will replace your boat. Let us know when the boat is in your yard.

This was an act of critical customer service for sure, kudos to C-Dory for stepping up to the plate. They will make more revenue as a result of replacing this boat than they will loose.

PS Capt. Pat tends to yell in his posts....he must be running loud old diesels or something (he he).

CAPTAIN MATT,,,,,
I NEVER YELL, WHAT DO YOU MEAN I YELL, HOW DARE YOU, I NEVER GET MAD, I DESPISE MADNESS, I TAKE GREAT OFFENCE AT YELLING, ,,,,
hope you see the humor in this post!
as always, hope your days is going well.
best regards
pat

My CD 25 had some known serious issues and when I inquired about having the factory pay to fix the boat before I purchased it, the stock answer was the 5 year hull warantee does not extend to the second owner. When I pointed out that this had both been documented on the C Brat site and that the first owner had contacted the factory about repair--and had received an OK to proceed, the factory said that they would cover those items which the purchaser had brought to their attention. I purchased the boat with this understanding. When I got the boat home, and had time to cut into it, to find the extend and cause of the transom problems (the cockpit floor was the issue documented with the factory), there was some reluctance to cover it. After sending photos and E-mails they did cover the costs--but there was some discussion that this was partly because I had saved them money by doing my own repairs on the new Tom Cat 255 and that I did part of the labor on the 25.

I also discussed at length about the fuel tank--since there is a documented problem with some of the early 25's plastic fuel tanks. I was told it the tank was leaking, that they would replace it--but that the wait for a new tank would be several months. Also that they would cover "safety" issues like the tank for the 5 years for any second owner. I pressed the issue and asked if the tank failed at 6 years for a second owner, would they replace the tank? The answer was absolutely not. That there was a limit of their responsibility.

We all have to realize that almost every product we buy has factored into the "cost" that of warantee or failure. It is going to happen, and a reputable company will stand behind the product for a certain time. But there does have to be a cut off peroid.

One has to watch the peroid of warantee and the fine print at pruchase. For example the current C Dory web for the CD 22 says "hull warantee 5 years"--nothing about first or second owner. But I suspect if you dig deeper into paper work, there maybe some stipulation about origional owner.

Roger: Great to see you again Brother at the Hawthorne Hotel Seattle. Humm...song there? Any one else hear the Eagles? Better news that the factory is going to take care of you. Now, I just hope they deliver in a timely manner. I can not think of a dealership that would not give up a production slot as to get you a boat to replace the faulty hull. I am not sure how long from start to finish a new CD22 takes??

Interesting that a hull should be a hull no matter who owns it, unless someone does a faulty installation practice like mounting a motor without using any sealants for the thru hull transom bolts that would cause a transom to fail on most boats. But to back off the warrantee because Roger sold me his boat so he could buy another and that cut the factory warrantee down to the date of the sale...Humm... Seems to me that move would reduce the number of folks willing to purchase a 2-3 year old C-Dory from another only simply due to the original owner wanting to move up from one size C-Dory to another larger one. Let's face it... Many folks do not have the budget for a new C-Dory...and that 2-4 year old one may be do-able with the depreciation of the motor, trailer and electronics off of the boat bought new.

Looking at the pictures of Roger (Fishtales/C-Hawk) boat bottom issues.... I sure am glad he was not hurt. Looks like a good time for folks to use special powers of attorney rather than changing first owners until the five years is up...

Anyway... let us just watch Scot and see what is produced for Roger. I may be wrong, but there seem to be an air in the factory Saturday night that they were about to get back to some quality builds rather than mass numbers produced. It was good to see the Reynolds again. They had a tuff 2007 and I wish them good luck and good business practices in 2008.

Ha ha, I think you were referring to "Captain Pat" (not Captain Matt).

Like I said.....I will believe it when I see it...... I heard Scot tell Roger that Recardo would have the papers at the factory dinner and they would sign them then...... Then I heard Recardo tell Roger at the dinner that he was too busy at the dinner and that he would have the papers ready for signing this week...... Sounds kinda like Scot and Recardo are not on the same page.... all this should have been done months ago.

What it boils down to is.....Roger has been without his boat since October and been making payments on it.....paying insurance and storage, yet not been able to use it.... and now will be LUCKY to have it by May....

I don't blame him for being upset with Recardo....
