Florida Big Bend Cruise

Marlene and I spent Saturday night eating steak at the Fort Walton Yacht Club with the Power Squadron. This morning we left cruising on CHARITY east and stopped today (Sunday) at Port St. Joe, Florida. We plan to spend two or more days here and then on to Apalachicola, Florida. We will keep you posted as we go along where they have WiFi. Our cruising speed averaged 20 knots and we burned 35 gallons of gas for 103 miles distance. The water was clean and there were no floating debris (logs and sticks). Supper tonight at the Dockside Cafe at the Marina. Shrimp and Grouper, yum yum. We bought a Chocolate French Silk pie at the local Piggly Wiggly grocery for desert.

You got great weather for your cruise Dave. We spent several days last week in Apalach--the nights were cool and the days weren't too hot--it was great. We hit our usual oyster bars and, at the advice of one of the locals, we tried a place on Market St. called Tamara's. The food was great. Although it's not on the menu, they had Tres Leches for desert--it was very good. We stayed at the Water Street Marina. It's nice having the pool. Do you plan to go all the way around the Big Bend? Hope you have a great trip. I'll follow your progress when you post.

Dave , lets see if we can get together . I will be here.
The cards for having the gathering didn't fall into place this year , but don't hesitate to enjoy this area !

This is our second day at the Port St Joe City Marina. We walked all over beautiful downtown Port St Joe City and visited all of the stores on the 4 block street. Most were closed for the Columbus Day Holiday and most are closed on Mondays anyway. So Marlene did not get to spend any money. We ate a Peppers Mexican Grill for lunch. To eat in all of the restaurants you would have to stay here several weeks. We did lots of walking this morning and this afternoon we just took it easy.

The marina is on winter rates of $1.00 per foot which is a good deal. The Summer rates are $1.50 per foot. Regular gas (no ethanol) however is $3.99 per gallon. I think I will wait for a fill up at Sippio Creek in Apalachicola. The service is really great and this is a very good place to stay. I have stayed here several times and will be back. Tomorrow we will travel in the direction of Apalachicola and see what happens along the way.

Hello Dave and Marlene,

I HIGHLY recommend "Joe Mama's" restaurant in Port St. Joe. It's within walking distance from the marina in the 'main street' part of downtown...maybe 4-5 blocks from the marina, maybe. Their pizza is very good.

You've probably already visited Bluewater Outriggers store if you've been to the grocery store (since they are next door to each other). Bluewater sells a lot of fishing and boating stuff.

Enjoy your trip!

On Tuesday we left Port St Joe for a short trip to Apalachicola. There were lots of Hydrilla (water lilies) floating everywhere. Found a slip that was empty, tied up the lines and hooked up to electricity. Last week the city did away with the position of Harbormaster due to budget cuts. Could not find anybody to pay so we stayed free. At the city marina there is electricity but no bathrooms, no showers, no WiFI, "NO NUTTIN", etc., so free stay wasn't too bad. With no WiFi we could not post, google or email any messages.

We had a very good visit with Marc Grove the President of Wefings Marine. He stopped by and we talked about boats and C-Dorys and a possible Gulf Coast Gathering in the future.

We had a very fine meal at the "The Grill". It is a restaurant on the corner where US 98 turns 90 degrees. There is a caution light here that one way is red and the other is yellow. Marlene had bacon wrapped deep sea scallops and I had a shrimp and oyster plate. I really do recommend this place to eat as we have eaten there several times and the sea food is always the best. After supper we went across the street to the Gift Shop and I bought a pink flamingo for my yard. What I use the pink flamingo for is to tell me how forward to pull my truck when I pull the boat into my yard.

We had planned to visit Dog Island and then on the Saint Marks and maybe on to Steinhatchee. However since we would be traveling in the open Gulf and seas were predicted to be 3 to 5 feet. And I did not get much sleep Tuesday night as my left foot hurt. Too much walking? No my gout flared up and I did not have any medicine so we decided to come home. We bought 35 gallons of gasoline at the Sippio Creek marina at $3.37 a gallon. They said that gas was going up next week. Well what else am I going to do with my children's inheritance? From Apalachicola to home is about 7 hours and the trip was smooth and enjoyable. There always will be another trip in the future.
