Roger - How big are the waves with a 35 mph blow? Coming from what direction? Just curious. Good luck. John

I don't know where my post are going? I answered this before but now don't see it......

Waves not really all that bad. 2-3 feet with white caps on that but as usual for this area they are very close so you can only make about 4 mph. Here are couple of more pictures. As I got to the channel the waves picked up a little then went back down. Of course they are always on the nose.

Roger - Thanks for the info and pictures. The elevated highway in the background is in what location on your trip? Knowing that I can check on a map where you have been. Take care. John

Roger - great fun following your adventure, we hope to follow in your footsteps in a couple of years! I would not want to try this alone though...

You wouldn't be alone. You would have Patty and Baxter....

Got into Everglades City today. Spent the day exploring the town. I think I'll launch the kayak tomorrow. I could fall in love with this Ten Thousand area. I up dated the blog.

Thanks Marc for answering John. I answered John but that's another post that I made that did not show up?

No problem , I drove over it a week or so ago. Looks like you made it out of the Panhandle with good timing . We are getting our usual March winds . If you are still in Naples , say hi to Jim and Laurie for me .

Roger,

Did you arrive at Flamingo via Florida Bay, or through the swamp route through the Everglades? When we were there in 2007 we came in from Florida Bay because the TomCat was too big to come through the Everglade Swamp route. When we got to Flamingo we found out that the locks were out of operation anyway. Interesting place, we were there after the big hurricane year of 2005. Most of the buildings were closed, and the marina was free w/power. We stayed a week before crossing over to Marathon, in the Keys.

What's your next destination? The Keys!!

Hi Roger,

Not being familiar with the area I am curious as to why your route is not a straight shot from Flamingo to Big Pine Key? did you have to avoid shallows on the route?

Hi Steve,

Joined up with a couple in a Rosbourg at Flamingo. We were going to go straight to Key West. We got about where we did and the weather was not to their liking. Winds ended up being 15-18 on the Srar beam. So we headed into better water. Not a real good place to do that. Lots of zig and zag. and not so well marked. Just about the time we made the change I went through several big patches of floating sea grass. Fowled the prop. I stopped and cleared by putting in reverse. The second time there was also a piece on floating line. I was running 3600 rpm. It spun the prop. It worked fine 1600rpm but would slip if I tried to get on plane.

I went into Pine Key to either swap to my spare or fine a repair shop. I found a shop in Stock Island where I am now. He will fix it tomorrow.

Roger,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear about the prop but good that you can get it fixed.

I am enjoying keeping up with your trip. I am doing taxes until April 15th. I would like to be tagging along with you but not sure I could handle the 'Slap Ya Mama' spices you like to eat.

Steve

Good to see you in port at Burdines in Marathon. There is a pretty good blow coming you way in the next few hours.

If you get a chance move on up the harbor and check out Boot Key...the mooring field and community of liveaboards.

Tell the folks at Burdines hey for me.

Know that your being tracked and we will be here if you need us.

Well, I almost made it before the front got here. I was 2.3 miles out. The thing got here sooner than expected. I came through the markers at the worst of it. The radar was of Zero use. The rain was so hard it could not see through it. At one point I could see the bridge on the radar then it got lost in the rain. The radio came alive with Mayday calls. There was a report of three people in the water near the bridge. I haven't heard any more about that. There is some radio traffic now about going out and getting some boats that got blown off the morrings or anchor I'm not sure which it was. Someone now just said there was a peek gust of 49.9. I don't know about that but I did lose the lid to my cooler. We'll see what tomorrow brings. I think I'll eat at Burdines. I'm back here in the back by the dingy dock.

Roger - Edna asked me what I was doing on the computer the other day and I told her about your trip. She left and returned wearing a very well used white T-shirt with the Moorings and the Big Bend area depicted on the front. She has had this T-Shirt for many, many years. Take care.

Hey Roger - How has it been going? I see that you have moved up the coast but not posts or pictures. How about an update?

Hope things are going well.

Steve
