Flushing outboards when in water

Hi All,
I have a 2008 22 Cruiser with original twin Honda 40s (BF40DKLRT serial number BBDJ-1002928. I keep it year round in salt water (no trailer). Per the manual, the flushing procedure is to flush via the "wash screw" with the onboard down and motor running. But the wash screw is in the lower unit below the water line. Also If I run the motor with it in the water I assume it will just pull in salt water. How are other people flushing these in the water? Thanks!
 
Does your model year Honda have a garden hose style flush port up top? If yes, use that with the motor fully down but do not turn the motor on. If not, there’s always flush bags. I had a Tohatsu TLDI 40 on another boat that only had a flush screw or spot for muffs, but I could run that motor while tilted out of the water. (You don’t want to do that for non-oil-injected motor like a normal four stroke.) Last but not least, you could always just run it daily and never flush it… like most commercial fishermen.

If it’s wash screw only, you’ll probably need the Honda adapter to thread into it. Here’s mine from my old Honda BF5

Thanks for the reply. I cannot find a flush port up top and there is no mention of one in the manual. I never heard of flush bags before, can I use them while in the water?

Some can be used in the water, yes, provided you have a freshwater source to fill it with (and presumably keep filling it with, as with a barrel). Do some internet searching and see what works best for you and your mobility etc..

Here’s my 2019 Honda BF90 with the OEM flush port up top. Unscrew the black hose from its holder (the black elbow looking part) and thread the black hose onto a water/garden hose (and run water through, while motor off and vertical).

Unfortunately I don’t have that flush port on mine. I’ll try the flush bag in the water. Thanks !
