Earlier this month, I received the depressing results of a biopsy taken from my Miniature Poodle (Remy). He has prostate cancer. I understand this is rare for a netered male. According to my veterinarian, surgery is not an option. Remy is not in any noticeable pain following his discomfort from the biopsy. My reason for posting this is to discuss an alternative medicine approach. By February 4th, he will have been on this routine for 3 weeks of a two month program. At this point he is back to being in-charge of this household.

One of the items in this program is a supplement called "Poly-MVA." Naturally, I've never heard of it before now. It is not approved by the FDA, but may extend the life span and comfort of your pet when cancer strikes. By mid-March, I should have a better idea of how many boat launches he has left (he's 10years old now).

Bill, so sorry for you and Remy. Pets can become so dear and important to us, we've been through many and it's never easy to lose one. Please keep us posted, we'll keep the pooch in our prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I did take some time to look at the product above and the associated "scientific" literature. I also did some searches through PubMed (a database of published scientific literature). While I am neither a vet nor an MD, I am a biologist. I'm afraid I must suggest that there is nothing in the record of peer reviewed literature or this founder's scientific background to suggest that this product will perform as advertised. Many of the advertising claims and theories sound like pseudo-science mumbo-jumbo. Just my opinion...but you might be better off buying other items that would make you and your dog more happy or comfortable.

Also, depending on the degree of the cancer and it's propensity to metastasize, it's entirely possible that your dog could live quite awhile with prostate cancer. Many men over 80 have prostate cancer but wind up dying of something else. It appears that in humans at least, prostate cancer is almost inevitable if you live long enough...

I appreciate your evaluation of Poly-MVA. I was hoping to hear more about the product from someone with knowledge in that area. Having already commited to this process, I will see it through to mid-March. Having read about this form of cancer in humans, I agree with what you say. I am worried about it spreading, in which case I will only have one option.
