Just a heads up... Got this from a fellow diesel guy.

Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling 1.17 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to fix an engine sensor that could lead to engine stalling. The vehicles are all from the 1997-2003 model years with 7.3 liter diesel engines, including the Ford E-Series van, Excursion full-size sport utility vehicle, and F-450 Super Duty and F-550 Super Duty trucks.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said there have been 14 accidents associated with the problem, but no injuries reported.

The recall is expected to begin around Dec. 17, with mailing of notification letters to be completed in phases by May 2008. Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332.

:xtongue I had a 2001 ford f250 7.3 diesel. About 50% of the time I would stop at a stop light the engine would die. I took it to several ford dealers who hooked it up to the computer and told me that it was probably the cam sensor, but because the computer did not show anything wrong....they could not repair it under warranty......now 4 years later they want to recall the truck............they just won't listen.......I traded for 2005 .....

thanks for the heads up, byrdman,
not only did my 2003 ford f-350 7.3L stall, it actually shut down all together, while under way, making way!
talk about no power steering, nor power brakes and all in major traffic. had to be towed and subsequently had the sensor replaced.
so, when i read your post i immediately called my local trusted beechmont ford dealership and they now have me on a short list and will process a refund for the prior part and labor expense.
never can tell what piece of valuable information will show up here!
best regards and a little more money in my pocket,
pat

Does anybody happen to have a newer F250 5.4? I just got an 08, and so far at 400 miles on the clock it's averaging 11.3mpg...ouch! I almost went diesel, but without having a real heavy tow, and diesel at .30 more than gas...I couldn't justify the $6500 upgrade.
I did install a K&N filter this morning...so I'm hoping for 11.4 mpg now :wink
I got 17mpg in my F150 with the same engine and a 4pd OD (new 250 has a 5spd OD)

It’s the cam positioning sensor (CPS), have one in my glove box with 10mm wrench. Was going to crawl under and replace it before making the trip south to retrieve Triple J, looks like now I can go have to boys down at the Ford dealership do the crawling and knuckle busting for me. :D In reality I’ll probable have to replace it myself to get it done before the big trip. :(
I get 19mpg hwy and about 14mpg towing 6000lb trailer.
Other then the faulty CPS I believe the 7.3 is probable the most reliable diesel international has produced for Ford; with only 57k on my 00 I’ll be driving her for a while. :love
Funny I should see a thread about this here; it’s the talk of the town on my other favorite user group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PowerStroke/

I DRIVE AND TOW WITH AN 06 F250 5.4L. AND AM A SERVICE ADVISOR FOR THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. YOUR MILAGE IS VERY CLOSE TO THE AVERAGE. REAREND RATIO IS THE ONLY FACTOR THAT AFFECTS THE MILEAGE ON THAT TRUCK. WITH THAT MILEAGE I WOULD GUESS YOU HAVE A 3.55 LIMITED SLIP REAREND. I ALSO CONSIDERED THE DIESEL FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. GLAD I WENT WITH THE 5.4 EVERY TIME I CHANGE OIL OR ANY OTHER MAINTENANCE. I FOUND THAT A VERY SMALL PORTION OF THE TIME THE VEHICLE IS USED IS ACTUALLY TOW TIME AND IT DOES GREAT TOWING. BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME WHEN IM NOT TOWING I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THE 5.4L IS THE LOWEST MAINTENANCE COST OF ANY ENGINE COMBO THAT IS CAPABLE OF DOING THE TOWING.
AS FOR THE 7.3L CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR RECALL. DEALERS ARE PERFORMING THE REPAIR AS WE SPEAK. EACH DEALER IS RECIEVING STOCK ON A WEEKLY BASIS BASED ON THE NUMBER OF TRUCKS IN THEIR TRADE AREA. IF YOUR DEALER IS OUT OF STOCK OPTIONS WOULD BE TRY THE NEXT NEAREST DEALER OR SCHEDULE WITH YOUR DEALER FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK.

LET ME CORRECT MY LAST POST. THE 2 REAR AXLE RATIOS FOR THE F250 5.4L ARE 4.10 AND 3.73. I HAVE THE 4.10 LIMITED SLIP WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, I SUSPECT YOU HAVE THE SAME AS OUR MILEAGE IS VERY SIMILAR. BUT FOR THE OTHER REASONS I AM CONVINCED IN THE LONG RUN IT WILL BE THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE COMBINATION.

I have a 2006 F250 5.4, which I use to tow Journey On. After 8000 miles of towing, the tow mileage is >8 mpg, but not much. The non towing mileage is 13.5 mph. the weight is 5500 lbs, and San Diego is hilly. I have the 3.73 and the 5 speed. So much for modern technology. Dependable, but a gas hog.

Around town I use the 63 Chevvy, which has a 350 (5.6?) with a 4-speed auto. It gets better than 15 mpg.

One problem with the F250. At the (very) end of the summer trip, it would overheat and shut down. Restart it 30 sec later. Really exciting on the Interstate. Had it fixed under warranty, there's a service buliten on replacing a coolant tube aimed at the sensor. Again, so much for modern technology. They just make it more complicated, not better.

I have the 3.73 ratio on my 00 7.3 PSD 4x4. If your getting similar fuel economy with a 5.4 gas engine that’s great! Most acquaintances of mine with super duty F250 4x4 gas guzzlers are lucky if they get 10 mpg averages.
Is this the C-Brats group of PSD group, I’m confused now???
The dealer here said they get a limited supply of cam positioning sensors on Wednesdays, so I need to call in the afternoon and get on the list; perhaps there’s hope.

The Cam Sensor has been a known problem for many years. I had discussed it with my Ford Dealer service manager, and considered getting a spare before we took our 6,000 mile trip this fall. The Ford service manager's comment, was since I had 147,000 miles on the 7.3 PSD that it was unlikely to fail--and suggested against carrying a spare....The question is that will the new sensor be failure proof--or just prolong the envitable?

I have a V10 which has the cruise control issue--and called for an appontment--the dealer said it would be at least Feb before they could get to my unit--and put me on the "list"...They will call when the parts come in. I am happy with the Ford Products--but I guess I would expect that they would have stockpiled enough sensors/repair parts when they did the recalls.

Mine is 3.73 limited slip with the 5spd auto OD. Haven't towed our 22 with it yet, but the F150 didn't know it was back there. The new F250 has the towing package, with the trailer brake controller, but my trailer has surge brakes (that I love!). It also came with 4 or 5 auxillary switches...I'm going to have to come up with something to hook to them since a man can't have switches that don't do anything. :xnaughty

YOUR DASH SWITCHES ARE FOR ACCESSORIES. THEY ARE NOT WIRED BUT TAPED OFF AS A BUNDLE BEHIND THE SWITCHES. THE BUNDLE GOES THRU THE FIREWALL AND IS TAPED OF IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I HAVE SEEN WINCHES, AUX. LIGHTING, HITCH LIGHTING, ALL USING THESE SWITCHES. PRETTY COOL. I HAVE THE BRAKE CONTROLLER IN MY 06 BUT NOT THE AUX SWITCHES. I ALSO HATE HAVING THAT TRICK BRAKE CONTROLLER WITH NOTHING HOOKED TO IT. BUT THE WAY IT LIGHTS UP WHEN YOU START THE ENGINE IS FUN.

Snal,

On my new (to me) 2006 F-250, the accessory switche wiring is taped off above the glove box. Two 30 amp and two 10 amp relays available. I may wire in a light in the trailer hitch area to one of them.

I love the 6.0 diesel! Seeing 20 mpg at 55 mph is a real joy. Paying 10% more for diesel and getting almost twice the mileage works for me. I'll amortize the extra cost of the diesel out over 10-15 years. This should be my last truck...

Roger, Dreamer

NEVER say "this is the last truck, boat, etc." I've owned 3 ea last motorcycles and 2 ea. last boats. On the other hand, this may be a good way to justify that new toy.

Just start planning your next, and enjoy this one.

I built a bed rack, mainly for my kayaks. Thought I might mount a couple of lights on the front rail to illuminate the bed, and a couple on the back rail to illuminate the hitch or blast tailgaters.
I have a nice drop of mirror finish stainless that I may use to fab a light bar mounted under the rocker panel with a few yellow LED lights.
I'm in WNC...I gotta redneck it up a bit.

BTW thanks again for the heads up on this. Took my truck in this morning and had the cam positioning sensor replaced. I was in and out the door in about 30min. :cocktail X2
