Former sailors - check out these pictures

When I bought the Sun Runner I intended to use the boat as a platform to take pictures of racing dinghies and keel boats on San Francisco Bay.

I am starting to do that now and I thought that some of the C-Brats might be interested in seeing the pictures. I gather some of you have sailed sailboats quite a bit in the past and have gone to a motor vessel as I did - probably for the same reason - age!

The pictures on C-Brats are just a small sample of my most recent trip to San Francisco Bay to photograph Richmond Yacht Club's Great Pumpkin Regatta. The pictures I selected to post on my web site (a lot more then here) are at:

It brings back great memories. One of the boats I used to race on Lake Erie was a 32 ft Melody Yawl. Going down wind with all the sails up (many different colors and patches) it looked like a chinese junk.

Nice images!

Yes, there are quite a few of us here who have been, or continue to be, sailors. Which leads me to comment on that "age" thing... I didn't switch from sailing to powercruising because of age; I just liked the protection of that enclosed helm... and the ability to point really high, as in: right into the wind. 8) Oh, and the view being good from anywhere in the cabin.

I even kept one of the sailboats for the first couple years I had the C-Dory... but, Wild Blue was the boat of choice. I still have sailing buddies who ask us if we want to go for a sail. Nice to sail, then politely ask if he wants a hand putting the boat away (knowing he will say no), and then walking back across the street to my boat. I sailed my last race a couple years ago. I'm OK with that. But, not because of age.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

We have used our boat for a photo platform for a few races on Sequim Bay. My photos never come out as nice as yours! :? Very nice work. I'm not a sailor and never was one but I enjoyed these a lot. Thanks for sharing.

Well said Jim. Like you, we didn't go to the powerboat because of age but because of convenience.... Still have two sailboats and we use them too, just not to go anywhere fast...Fun but different!

Nice pictures, brings back memories of San Francisco Bay, and Monterey Bay and Post Graduate School there where I rebuilt a turn of the century (1900) centerboard crabber into a nice little sailing sloop that leaked like a sieve! Eventually brought it back to the East Coast and sold it for less than I paid for the trailer I carried it on!

Roger,

Thanks for sharing, they are great pix.

One of the main reasons I enjoy boating is that I enjoy photographing from the boat. It is a different perspective.

Great photos! Like others, we had sailboats most of our lives. El taught me to sail. Coached a New England prep school sailing team for some years - last year coaching we took 1st in the New Englands.

Then El and I bought a Flicka and cruised her around the Loop while living aboard for three years. We sold her and moved to C-dory power so we could cruise up rivers.

We still love sailing with friends when the opportunity arises.
