Four Strong Winds

Have you ever been leisurely swings on the hook or nestled to a dock and heard these strains float across the water?

“ …. I'm going to work on them towboats
With my slippery city shoes
Lord I swore I would never do that again
Through the great fog bound straights
Where the cedars stand waitin
I'll be lost and gone
Like summer wages…”
or
“Think I'll go out to Alberta
Weather's good there in the fall
I got some friends that I could go to working for
Still, I wish you'd change your mind
If I ask you one more time
But we've been through this a hundred times or more

Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that run high
All those things that don't change, come what may
If the good times are all gone
Then I'm bound for moving on
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way…”

or

“Last night I dreamed of Smugglers Cove
The seabirds all were wheeling
Out on the riptide past Discovery Isle
Where killer whales come stealing
Where killer whales come stealing …”

The artist who penned and sang these great songs and many more, passed away on December 29, 2022 at his ranch near Longview, Alberta. I figured many C Brats would recognize his signature sound no matter who performed his tunes.

A true legend with an amazing voice - his songs told stories, stirred the soul and conjured up an image in your mind that remained with you long after the song faded. Remember listening to him back in the 60's and even today when I hear 4 strong winds can't help getting emotional.

RIP

Rob

I’ve been a fan of Ian’s for nearly sixty years. He was a real man’s man.

A CBC Radio poll in 2005 named Four Strong Winds the greatest Canadian song of all time.

Arrgh--this is a loss. "Someday soon (Blow you old blue norther)" was a heartbreaker, along with "four strong winds.," and many more.
