fuel tanks

Catch 22

New member
so im new to the club, just got a 1981 angler, im redoing the transom so i have the back of the boat stripped and empty, once the transom is rebuilt, i will be putting a 90 horse late 90's johnson om the boat, so im starting to think about how to design the back of the the boat (fuel tank(s),oil tank, batteries, water separator, bilge pump... and im wondering how much fuel to carry, thus determining what kind of tank to get, one in the back, or two on the sides, i will be using the boat for fishing and weekend trips with the occasional extended trip. im wondering if people have input on how to set up the back of the boat to maximize the space in back, i have the box cut out and will make a new one once i have a better idea of where tanks and batteries will go, any ideas/suggestions....thanks

Nice work! That is a hefty project there. My 22 came with two 23-25 gallon tanks, I can't seem to remember which. But I think its the 23 gallon size. Which is plenty for a pretty long trip. I went from everett way out into the straight last weekend running close to 30 both ways most of the time and had almost 3/4's of a tank left at the end of the trip. Obviously your consumption will vary if you have a two stroke but I would think somewhere close to 50 gallons should be right for most situations.

If I had my boat stripped down like yours is, or nearly is, I would opt for the saddle tanks. It would give you a lot more room in the back. Look at Oldgrowth Daves' pictures and see what he did on his 16/18. Another upside is it moves a little more weight forward.

Kevin - I have been following your rebuild project. It looks like you are doing a fantastic job and you will have a great boat when finished.

As Lloyd said, I would suggest you put in saddle tanks and as he also stated, it will shift 350 to 450 pounds (depending on the size of your tanks) from the stern to a more forward position. This will improve the ride and fuel economy of the boat, especially if you put a four stroke outboard on.

In my album HERE, you can get an idea of how I did it.

Good luck on your project.
