Fuel

Kind of a depressing subject right now, but important ! Wondering if any of the CD folk are cutting back on their boating adventures ? A few years ago on the old CD owners site I warned of the coming fuel increases and the moderator there (Ken I believe) said not in his lifetime, wonder what he thinks now ? Sold my old small CD this spring and now have the bug again. Thinking of the Ranger 21.

Consider that there are sport fishers who are burning close to 100 gallons an hour...the C Dory line seems very economical. As the recent threads say--you can always run at displacement speeds. Nope, just the cost of doing business.

I think when this came up last year my response was something to the order of traveling the same distance but staying more days. What I have found is that I spend more nights on the boat and dispense with just day trips.

For example in the Cook Inlet, you can have two days of halibut limits in possession. If you are going to Homer to fish halibut, go out on Saturday, fish, go into Seldovia, clean the fish, take on some ice, spend the night, and head out Sunday to fish for a few hours and head back to Homer. Almost the same fuel as a day trip and a whole lot more fun. I think a three or four day will work since you can freeze the fish in Seldovia and just head back to Homer heavy on fish.

Tom,

We go at our Homer trips the same way as you, muti-day. but.......where are you going to freeze halibut in Seldovia??? I'm not familiar with anywhere yet. Help.

Thanks,

John,

There was a place across from the harbormaster with a sign selling ice and freezer space or at least that's the way we interpreted it. We were never there when it was open since after about 8:00 pm the only place we have found open in Seldovia is the bar and liquor store at the hotel.

Would that be the place that also rents ATV's by chance???

Ah yes......the Linwood bar, where else do bartenders stand on the bar and pull down there pants for photos, even on a Wednesday night. You gotta love that place. I went to put money in the juke box and someone finally pointed out to me that it already had 2300 credits. Not much of a place to look at, but man the clientelle really know how to party.

Oh yeah, don't buy fuel in Seldovia if you don't have to at $3.72 per gallon it's a good .50 higher per gallon than Homer. I made the mistake of making a 100 gallon fill up a couple weeks ago before I asked the price.

That's the ATV place.

Yes the Linwood Bar. I heard a story about a fight a few weeks ago when some guys previous two ex's jumped his current girl friend. When the State Trooper boat pulled out late Saturday night, the locals in the bar ragged on them pretty bad. I would have considered it sufficient provocation for a search for people with outstanding warrants, but the two troopers just turned up the music and kept on going.
