Garmin 172C with GSD 20 remote sounder question

I would like some feed back from any Brats who have the Garmin 172C with the GSD 20 black box Remote Sounder; my new boat comes with the 172C and I’m thinking of added the GSD 20. Additionally, if you’re using this combo I’d also like to know what transducer you’re using and are you happy with the set up.

If this has been hashed out before in a previous thread please forgive me, I’ve not been able to find it.

Thanks

I had the GSD 20 on my old boat (22) with a Garmin 185C chartplotter. Worked great. I used a paddlewheel transducer on the transom mounted between two Honda 45's. It would loose bottom lock once in a while but pick it up pretty quickly.

I would personally go with a separate fish finder. This preserves the screen size for navigation. The screen is only 4.5 inches to begin with and when you chop this in half you have lost a certain resolution of the charts. There are a number of good fishfinders which cost about the same as the GSD 20, plus you will have a decent screen for the depth finder and the chart plotter will be preserved.

The Garmin is a decent fishfinder--but there are some which I personally like batter (and I have a 5" Garmin fishfinder). For the $ the Hummingbird or the Lowrance offer a very good product.

Point well taken Bob, I’ve never liked malti function unites of any kind because there is always a compromise. For the money there does seem to be better fish finders out there with more power and bigger displays.
Like I said earlier I’m totally new to this game and appreciate suggestions coming from more seasoned boaters.
It’s these types of comments that will help in making a decision.
