Gauges Do Not Work, 2008 C-Dory Center Console 90 Honda

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have an idea what would be causing the all gauges not to work. I resent installed a new radio and a new Garmin. They working prior to install. I checked all ground and power connection and I checked all the visible fuses.

Any thoughts.

Did you check for a voltage with a multimeter at the gauges or elsewhere?
 
I have not. Any suggestion on how I should troubleshoot the system. It's tight under the console:-)
 
Did you trip a breaker fuse by the batteries, or not re attach a wire? Could be ground as well. as positive.

Most of us are not familiar with the wiring under the console of the center console C Dory. I have owned several center console boats, and usually there is an access point. In my current CC, I have to remove a tackle box station in the front of the console to access the wiring.

Nothing earth shaking, but checking connections is one thing, finding an actual voltage at the connection point is another. Just checking/tightening connections may accidentally fix something, but you are shooting in the dark. By measuring voltages you will find out if the connections up stream toward the battery are actually working. (Note you can tighten a connection and it may still not work given corrosion of a break in the wire etc.)

Just turn things on and start tracing connections from whatever appliance or unit you have back toward the battery. If there is voltage (normally 12v) at the unit, you will know that circuit is OK. If no voltage, then start going connection point by connection point back toward the battery. Once you find a voltage, then the break is btwn there and the last spot where there was no voltage.
 
As Bob/thataway said, don't forget to check the grounds going back to the battery. If you use the instrument ground for the negative side of the multimeter and it shows voltage, that's a good check.

And check the battery locker for a wire that wasn't put back on after somebody changed out the battery. I almost put a new wash down pump in because of that - the ground wire was sitting in the bottom of the battery tray.
 
My Honda 150 had a blown fuse I caused while replacing one gauge...what
I did wrong was touch the negative to a positive connector on the gauge causing the blown fuse under the motor cover!
 
It works.... I checked the gauge circuit on the power side and found no voltage across the inline fuse block. The fuse was OK but the block was so corroded I had to replace it. Thank you for all the tips. John
