Geez, Joe, I Might As Well Surrender Now!

Those who can focus on classwork and put up with the routines do well. Others, bored with the tedious approach, often find ways to learn what's necessary on their own.

I thought we might hear from a teacher on this...

Much as I generally hated school, I had many excellent teachers who recognized this, and still provided encouragement and alternatives. They understood my thirst for learning, and found ways of satisfying it beyond scheduled coursework, and for that I owe them a great deal.

The first of which was my third grade teacher, Mrs. Westphal. What a great lady...when it became clear to her I understood, but was bored stiff with the basics, she set me loose on my own. I was allowed to sit in the back of the class, and basically read books all day that interested me. She would give me a suggestion of a category to read - science, fiction, history, etc. But she never assigned any particular text, and made it clear I was free to choose from whatever books were available in her classroom or at the library.

Every week, she would set aside some time to chat with me about what I was reading. No doubt in my mind, I was learning far more than the other kids, and was having a great time doing so.

Which leads me to think, that perhaps the most important teachers we have are those from our early years. If one posesses the abiliity to make a child excited about learning, that's a trait that will probably follow them for life.

I AGREE WITH YOUR ANALOGY, HOWEVER, THE UNITED STATES HAS BECOME MORE SERVICE ORIENTED AND SUBSTANTIALLY LESS OF PRODUCTION. OUR INDUSTRIES, WHICH PRODUCE ITEMS, ARE HAVING GREAT DIFFICULTY COMPLETING WITH ABROAD COMPANIES THAT HAVE LESS PAYROLL AND/OR BENEFITS, EXPENSES. SO, WHILE YOU ARE TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUCCESS, WHICH PUTS YOU IN THE TOP 5% OF WAGE EARNERS, YOUR CHILDREN AND MINE, MAY NOT FARE AS WELL. THUS OUTSOURCING HAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO CHANGE HOW WE AS INDIVIDUALS FOCUS ON IMPROVING OUR SKILLS , TO THE POINT THAT WE STAND OUT FROM OUR COMPETITION. MY GUESS, IF I'M GOING TO FRAME A HOUSE OR REPAIR A VEHICLE, I'LL PROBABLY BE BETTER EQUIPPED FOR SAME, HAVING A DEGREE.

Yes, I was wondering about that, why not cut out the middle man, I just send my Social Security tax directly to you...

Someone has to keep paying into Social Security so the rest of us can draw ours out. My draw down starts next week.

Sorry there, Bill - not gonna let you even CLOSE to my bifurcated mandible molars!

Don't worry, Dr. John - I know my limitations. I won't be grabbing the pliers, doing a Google search, and figuring out how to yank any molars. Some things are probably better taught in school.

Dammit...I lied, just couldn't resist. Now I know how.

Bill - I'd be happy to present you with an honorary degree from the "Roger B School of the Over Educated". However, in the end the degree grant process would be more like the wizard giving you something to acknowledge what you already had inside.

Quiz Time?

I was going to start another thread for this but decided to stuff it in here. This thread seems to have a lot about nothing, so why start another thread for something that will be over by Saturday.

It could happen as early as late tomorrow (Friday) but more than likely will happen Saturday.

Good chance it will be by Joe (Sea Wolf) or Pat (Daydream) but could be by anybody.

Can someone guess what I am referring to.

That was too easy - will have to think up a harder one next time.

This thread my be a record for post in one day. So far there has been 31 today.

While discussing "records"......I remember a time several years ago when we decided in advance to try to see how many members we could get on the site at one time. Now in looking at the home page I see that the "Most Users Ever On Line" on this site was 73 on 6/7/06. Obviously, that number is without us even purposely trying to create a record. (My recollection is that we only had about 30 something folks when we tried).

(Of course, I remember a time when there were only 2 actual members on the site, then a few more of us jumped on and it started growing quickly! )
