Getting Our New Boat Home

We just purchased a used C-Dory 22 and are looking at options to get it home (Seattle to Ohio). The option I like the best is driving out to Seattle to pick it up and while we are out there, cruising those beautiful waterways for a few days before returning home. Not sure I have the time required to do this.
I checked some car rental companies and it seems they will not allow towing with their vehicles. If I could find a one way rental, I could fly up there and tow it home.
Commercial shipping seems like it will be about $2500. Ouch!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.?
We are really excited to finally be owners of a C-Dory. I guess I will need to change our website name (DoryWannaB).

My guess is that if you're flexible on timing - and it's ready to roll on its own trailer - you'll see around $1,000 bids.

I would recommend cruising around here, but...um...the weather truly sucks this sime of year. 40s and raining, and the days are short.

There's also a guy that the factory uses to move boats around...someone else will have the contact info.
 
I can highly recommend Cory at Sharp Yachts Transport. His number is 425-508-0802. He is a great guy and will take very good care of your boat if you decide to go with him. As was mentioned, if you are flexible with shipping dates you will likely get a better deal.

Try this company out. They tow C-Dorys for a living as well as other brands. I used him from W. Palm Beach to Wash. state. No problems. Good job.

It looks like he has lots of good options. And I have heard of the one you mentioned before about them being good. It is good somebody has some first hand experience on those guys just to verify. Just curious, when are you driving up? You know the derby is only a couple of months away.....Here fishy fishy.....
 
Fishy fishy is safe from me until early May. We will not leave from here until April 12.
I have done the derby several times but was not impressed with the overall experience. One time the 2nd place fish was on our boat. The rods were up for grabs and I did not grab fast enough.

I would give Cory my vote too. He has never hauled for me but (I slept in a hotel once -- does that count?) ACTUALLY, I met him up on Whidbey Island one day when they were dropping a load at EQ, and seems very professional, knows what he is doing and treats the C-Dorys right, and more important, does it full time, across the country and probably goes right by you some time or another.

I looked at all the options for a delivery from CT to MT last fall. Cory at Sharp Yachts was the best option. I took some Uship bids but no one had the equipment or expertise that Cory has. He will load everything on his trailer. He hauls for several boat manufacturers. There are photos in my album.

The other option if you want to fly in to Seattle and tow it back yourself is to rent a U-haul. They allow you to tow. It would probably run you about $1500.00 plus fuel. When you look at all the options $2500 is not a bad price unless you have lots of free time and can drive the round trip.

Just want to offer our congratulations on the new boat.

We have a 25 that we keep at our house on Grand Lake St Marys. I bought our boat in New Jersey and had it delivered to Southshore Marine on Lake Erie so they could rig it the way I wanted and then I went up and towed it home.

You might try renting a U-haul truck in Seattle. They may allow you to tow it with their truck. Not sure when it's all said and done that you'll beat the delivery price by much after air fare, truck rental, fuel, etc.

At any rate, it's good to see another C-Dory in Ohio...
 
Thanks for all the advice. The fellow I bought it from said I could leave it there until spring. We would really like to do some boating in that area so I plan to take a couple of weeks of vacation and drive out to Seattle. That should give us enough time for some boating and the trip home.
I guess I will just have to settle for pictures of it for a couple of months.

Thanks. It's amazing how different it feels to come to this website now that we own a C-Dory than when we used to just browse around. You do really feel like you belong to a "family". No name for the boat yet. Maybe it will come to us when we see it in person.
