GPSMap 178C

I recently purchased a used C-Dory 22. It came with a GPS178C which works, but has no Data Card. Before I throw it away, does anyone have an East Coast data card or and old GPS178C w/card they would like to sell? These units are no longer produced along with the cards. Seems a shame to throw away a good instrument for this reason.
Thanks,
Bob

Congrats on your new C-Dory, and welcome! :thup

I ran into the same thing with the Garmin 2006C that came with my boat :cry I checked in here but came up dry (however that was two years ago, so you may very well have better luck now). I did eventually amass a collection of the data cards though. My best source was eBay, and I also got one from Craigslist.

www.tigergps.com provided me with the best information to carry out "the hunt." First a list of which units used these particular cards, and then a list of the cards with coverage maps and part numbers. These helped immensely when searching/buying. Here is an excerpt and then a link to the chart cards listings (they no longer have any in stock, but the listings are invaluable when looking to buy used ones):

If you've got a chartplotter made before 2006, your unit accepts the older Garmin Data Card format. This includes GPSMAPs 172, 172C, 178, 178C, 182, 182C, 188, 188C, 2006, 2006C, 2010, and 2010C. Unfortunately, Garmin is no longer updating these maps; the last update was in July 2008

EDITED TO ADD: I just went to check, and sadly, tigergps now only shows the information for two chart cards, when they used to show them all. I did save a large number of them (coverage maps and card numbers), so if you are going to search and have a specific area in mind, I could send you information for that area's various chart cards.

Note that there are certain cards that are large or jumbo and have all the data of many individual cards. If you are only looking for a card or two, you may find that by buying an older/defunct unit of one of the above it has the card with it, especially if local.

Also, if searching eBay, note that if the map showing the cards range is a 3D like relief map, that is the next generation of cards (names are similar) and does not fit the 178. "Our" generation of cards present with "flat" maps that have no relief.

I found an old Garman Blue Chart card for the outside passage in my stuff the other day. PM me your address and I'll send to you if you are interested.

Also I have an old C map card for Long Island Sound if anyone is interested in that one.

Bob, I have a 188C, complete without external GPS antennae. I suspect they use the same card, power cable, and transducer. The card has all the maps from Crystal River south, all the Keys, Bahamas, and the East Coast at least thru Jacksonville. Pm me if you need it.

I bought a 16 angler this spring from a fellow down in Washington, which is equipped with a Garmin 188. It has 2 data cards: Washington to Northern California and one for Seattle. I would not mind trading those two for one for BC West coast, if possible.
PS: Love the boat. Dragged it another 1000km north to Reindeer Lake this summer. Best boat for big lake fishing, though I had to modify the boat trailer so it could handle 400km gravel road.

I have an 182C and have had the same data card issues, but to be honest, once I started using my old 1st gen Ipad and a $50 Navionics app my Garmin is really only used as a backup GPS. The Navionics app lets you download all the charts for US and Canada for the original $50 fee and has many more features for trip planning and underway navigation.

I use that too but the updates are good for year only. As long as things don't change too much, it's not a problem. The HD Navionics is even more detailed.

I hope you did not buy Bambina from Brock Arnold- if you did, good for you, our loss. If not, Brock, where the heck are you, bud? The Garmin 188 on Bambina used to be on the CD22 Daydream...
