Great New Site for Florida Cruisers

I assume that you are promoting your web site and guides. Not sure what the accuracy of your guides are, but in reviewing the web site, much of it seems to have been written by chamber of Commerces. There are a number of in-accuracies and omissions in all areas. There is much local knowledge missing.

There are a number of guides which cover this area--including the Waterway Guides, Skipper Bob publications (also currently owned by the Waterway Guide group) Lindsay's guide (I believe out of print) and Claiborne Young's excellent guides. Also Active Captain covers this area (and much more) far more accurately, with excellent feedback.

I am not sure what you want from the C Brat community. But I cannot validate your material in those parts of Florida which I am familiar with.

Bob,

You certainly know more about Florida than I do. I have never been there and cannot speak to the accuracy of he info.

I did go the the link, 'about us', at the very bottom of the page and found that the apparent site owner or founder is Rusty Gardner.

Perhaps Mark knows Rusty or just found his web site, maybe he will let us know.

Mark and his wife own a C-Dory. They are also the publishers of the Managing the Waterway Guides. I have their guides for the east coast and Florida Keys - I really like the format.

I think Mark was just mentioning the Florida by Water website... no idea if there is any connection. I heard about the Florida by water site on the World of Boating a week or two ago. It sounds like it will be a worthwhile site as more people give input. Like any new cruising website that depends on user input for info and ratings, this will be a work in progress.

So, unless I'm misunderstanding, Mark's post wasn't to promote his website, just informing folks that another option for cruisers exists.

BTW, I bought Mark's most recent book, "Get Onboard with E-Charting", in combination with the DVD set of all available US charts. Very well done.

Best wishes,
Jim B,

I thought that the information was helpful. I am going on the St John's River tomorrow and was looking for restaurants along the way. The problem that I have with cruising guides is that they only cover the places meant for deep draft vessels. If there isn't four foot of water coming to the docks they don't seem to list it. I am looking for old Florida fish camps and other places that are off the beaten path.
I found the River Grill on the Tomoka river by researching his site. I doubt Mr Young in his Cruising Guides cover this out of the way place. Granted there are some inaccuracies but overall I was impressed.
I am not very familiar with Activecaptain but I didn't see restaurants as an option to search for.

Hi Folks,

Sorry for any confusion. Diana and I have NOTHING to do with this site. We just think it's a good start for a site that will grow to be pretty useful for those cruising in the Sunshine State.

And thanks for the kind words about our books and DVDs! We're shlogging out the final pages, trying to get this latest guide off to the printer ... and any encouragement sure does help! [smile]

Stay in the deep water,

Mark

I looked at the Charlotte Harbor area and it is a good start.

It says does not recognize needs to know what program pdf adobe , notebook , word , etc ,etc this is over my paygrade ??

Is your PC working correctly after OS was re-installed?

MS has a free service called Fix-It

http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

It does not take long to run and might be worth the effort to try it.

It does have some limitations; cant solve world hunger, create world peace, over fishing, ground water contaimination, stop the flu from spreading, fix leaky boats, etc

Just got the levano computer back from them new OS system seems to be running fine . I think it might be a software problem but I can try that just in case

Thanks Brent for all the ideas but so far no luck.Iit will load up the files but will not let me view the individual charts?

I think there is a subcription needed now ? through fugawi??

I just want to get some chart loaded on computer to use as planning tool I think they sell these charts and maybe you have to re do them every year Im not sure The set I bought was from Mark and Diana Doyle Authors of Managing the Waterways .2010 I guess they have a monopoly once you buy them need to resubscribe every yr ???

Hi Jenny,

Sorry, I didn't get a notification on this thread update so didn't know you were having problems with installing the charts or software on your new computer. I trust Diana got you squared away by now.

If not, l.m.k. at mark@managingthewaterway.com.

It's been a little nuts here. Got our son off to college, put the house up for sale, and moved back aboard full-time. PDQ power catamaran, 34 feet.

We've just finished two runs of the ICW, stopping at all of the marinas, anchorages, etc. and will put out a complete revision to our Managing the Waterway: Hampton Roads, VA to Biscayne Bay, FL (ICW) guide later this spring.

The 2012 chart and nautical publications DVDs will burn in about a month. We held them this year because we found out that NOAA, USACE, et al get backed up around the holidaze and most of the changes pop early in the year. We wanted to include those so waited a couple months later than we usually burn.

Thanks Brent for stepping up and helping Jenny in our absence. We really appreciate it.

Best, Mark

I tried to load charts on 2 different computers no cigar ?? One of my friends is an I T guy could not get it to reveal the charts It shows the dvd downloaded to computer but it would not let us pull up charts ??
