handheld VHF recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for a handheld vhf radio. I did a quick search on the site and found several mentions of vhf handhelds but the strings never really focused on different brands and cost. I'd prefer a waterproof model and ideally one that floats. I have been looking at the ICOM and Standard Horizon models. Dr. Bob mentioned the ICOM 34 in one thread and the Standard Horizon seem to have good reviews. Both of these have models that appear reasonable for about ~$150. Does anybody have one that they like that is more like ~$100?

thanks,

Karl

I was in WM about a year ago and looking at portables, they had a WM model VHF55 normally runs 120 on sale for $59 I figured count not loose too much. Am actually pleased with the long battery life. It is JIS 7 rated with a 3 year warranty. I have never seen it down at that price since but goes for $79 frequently. I just use it as a backup. I will pickup either a ICOM M34 or Standard Horizon models that float.

The Uniden Atlantis 250 is a waterproof steal on Amazon at under $80 with an NMIH battery pack/cradle and chargers. Doubt it floats but I don't know if that's a big deal if you have it on a lanyard. But I did put mine in my emergency bag almost a year ago and when I looked at it today the battery meter still read full charge.

I just bought a Standard Horizon HX850S for $205. Just getting to know it. It has gps and dsc calling capability and floats. Its more difficult to operate, no simple nobs for volume and squelch. It also has a strobe that I think is pretty cheezy. I think it would be pretty hard to find you with that tiny strobe unless right on top of you. Also, directionally would pretty much need to be pointed right at you as its a recessed single lcd. A good waterproof flashlight would likely be much better for signaling. I also note that if I fell overboard without reading glasses I'd have a hard time reading most anything on the screen except the channel number.

I have the Uniden Atlantis, as well. It's excellent and the price looks like it meets your requirements. Two of my boating buddies bought one after I bought mine, and they're pleased with the Uniden, too.

I recently bought a Standard Horizon HX280s-submersible handheld VHF.

It is a new model this year and was $100.00 at West Marine.

I haven't used it out on the water yet, but it seems sturdy, and has a large capacity li-ion battery. Comes with a charging cradle, and a 120 and a 12 volt cord for the cradle.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I decided to go with the ICOM 34. By the way Matt at Commercial Captains gave me a great deal and really prompt service. Thanks to all.
