Harry Truman and C-Brats

You're probably wondering what Harry Truman has to do with C-Brats. Several years ago a book of his letters was published. The letters were angry, scathing, testy comments about issues and individuals he and the country dealt with at the time. The thing is, he wrote these letters in the heat of the moment, and then put them in an oval office desk drawer where they sat for years with no one knowing they'd ever been written. When historians discovered them they figured this was his way of dealing with irritation and frustration without saying some things publicly that he couldn't take back. Historians generally agree that this was a really good idea.

A good idea, Patti and Barry. Not only gives time to cool the emotional first reaction but also time to get all the facts.

We remember the days when discussing (politics, especially) was considered a duty of all Americans concerned about their democracy - and when folks would talk with calmness and understanding of other viewpoints. My, one of my favorite ways of learning more about a current issue, was to discuss from the 'opposite' viewpoint of the one I thought best - that way I would learn the reasons for both viewpoints and be better founded in what I considered the more reasonable 'route.'

There are few with whom one can have this pleasant experience today - you folks are two with whom we've had some great chats about darned near anything, and often politics of which you are 'inside' experienced. Yes, Harry Truman does have a contribution to make to this site, and to all of us - thanks for sharing with us.

The "other" Harry Truman

"This is where I am, this is where I am staying and nobody is convincing me of anything different". Harry wouldn't move, but the mountain did. Mt St. Helens, 1981.

Harry Truman and C-Brats.

Barry, Your Harry story is a very good one.

I see what you mean. This posting should probably be put in a drawer. Well, there is a great deal about Harry and Bess that I do admire. But, not to throw coldwater on the good intent of this thread, he could keep a cool demeanor while ordering dropping some significant weaponry on his/our adversaries. My point is this-arguing with emotion is, to me, a healthy thing. Just because you or I disagree doesn't mean that the opposition's heartfelt argument or expressed feeling hasn't been long considered. These are not academic exercises, they are expressions of core beliefs about real issues. I enjoy the company of my fellow C-Brats of many differing opinions. How could I not?

We are not the same America or Americans as back then. Nowadays, anyone with whom one disagrees is not wrong, but actively evil, telling lies to destroy whatever one believes. How can you have a discussion with that attitude as the basis?

Not around this place. Maybe these people you are talking about could learn from this forum?

You mean the ones I see on Fox and MSNBC all the time? Or in the Senate and House too for that matter? Parroting party line talking points at the top of their lungs as a substitute for reasoned discourse. Putting party before country, scoring meaningless points in a game of gotcha in lieu of doing the peoples business.

Yeah! I already know what I think, it's much more interesting to hear the diverse opinions of others. Once in a while I even come to realize that my original thoughts were misguided. Go Brats!

How I miss the respectful back and forth between Oldgrowth Dave and Roger with others chiming in. These at times did deteriorate but almost always due to a new member that didn't get their relationship or new and old that temporarily forgot the just be nice rule.

I have written and kept in dry dock quite a few post in the past and even more that I probably should have, but think Marty's and Harper's posts on this subject pretty well nail it for me.

Marty, a corollary to this is that "It's OK to disagree. It is not OK to be disagreeable!" Too bad our political parties and media commentators don't know this one...

Did I mention we have not yet tackled religion and illegal immigration?

How about gun ownership and abortion while you're at it.... :disgust

I've resisted (up 'til now) posting on this one out of a deep respect for Barry. My personal opinion, for what THAT's worth  , is although we don't always agree (how boring) nothing posted here has gotten TOO out of hand, disrespectful or nasty. Hopefully, nothing I personally posted is taken that way either. Again, JMO. I'll try and make sure my postings follow that precedent. Boating season is fast approaching, and I'm sure I'll have numerous questions, inquiries etc to ask and stories to share.

I like this place and the people who visit. Why else would I come here otherwise? I get enough crap @ work!

I suspect that many of us have written letters to the editor we have never sent. Writing when upset is a form of catharsis to be sure. Harry went back to Kansas City without a bodyguard and a modest pension, unlike our current run of presidents. No scandal about him either, but then there was Bess. Can't imagine facing her. I recall some music critic had the temerity to lampoon Harry's daughter when she made her singing debut. That critic got an earfull from the president. As a father, not as our president. And Harry didn't become a lobbyist either. But then he was at his desk when the casulty totals from the war were first reported.

The simple admonition "just be nice." establishes the boundary for our comments. And because we share a common interest in C-Dorys and boating, the rest of the temporal world can do its thing without messing with our civilized and informative website.
