Interested in buying a 22 cruiser in future. Want to learn all I can. Ive only owned small bass boats 14 ft. I want to do trips and stay out on boat. It would be my wife and I. My main concern is being safe ,meaning boat handling and seamanship. Have to figure new or used yet also.Within next 10 years will be retiring. We now have a truck camper that we use alot,so now want to add a boat on the trips.Larry.

Welcome. There are a number of well equipped and nicely priced 22s available right now. I think you'll find that most folks believe the 22 a very sea worthy boat. They are not a go fast boat but can handle more than most boasters are willing to submit themselves to. I wouldn't worry about the handling part of the equation and would start to think about what I wanted on the boat for motors, electronics, etc.

Thanks for welcomes. I guess you learn as you go,mostly.Such as in and out of harbors ,marinas ect. Buoys ,rules of the road.I will be studying the forums here for safety and seaman ship. I need to learn basics on up ,anchoring ect. I like the idea of the c-dory ,being able to overnite, just like an rv except smaller.

There are two 22's--the angler and cruiser. The Angler has a larger cockpit and less room in the cabin--the Cruiser has a galley and bigger dinette, and is a better boat for more than an occasional overnight.

Most trucks which carry a camper can also tow a C Dory22, but look carefully at the total combined weight to be sure that is not exceeded. A camper and C Dory 22 is a great combination. But many just "camp" in the 22.

Find a local Coast Guard Auxillary or Power squadron to take classes at. Many times there will be "on the water" help also.

One book which is traditional is "Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship". West Marine has had it for about half price....which means that a new edition is coming out. I have one from the late 1950's the mid 70's and about a year ago.

Welcome aboard--and a lot of information if you read all of the forums!
