High Altitude Balloon Space Jump Record

October 1400, at about 1130 AM Pacific time, the attempt for a new high altitude balloon launched parachute jump record lifted off from Roswell, New Mexico. The Austrian pilot is planning to jump from the balloon capsule at a height of about 23 miles, and is expecting to break the sound barrier during his free fall drop.

Pilot, Felix Baumgartner; his chief assistant at mission control, is the current record holder 84 year old ????

This is on Discovery Channel running intermittently. Expected jump time is about 2 hours after launch. Climb rate is approx 1000 ft / min. Moving west at ~80mph over the ground speed.

This is happening now.

At 2 hours elapsed time, he is only 2,000 feet shy of a high altitude, manned balloon flight.

The previous manned record holder, set by 2 US Navy pilots in 1960.

(Info is coming from the Discovery channel commentator.)

The High altitude jump record holder, Joe Kitenger, did his jump in 1962, is the mission control voice to current record holder, Felix.

This is exciting to watch. (I know, I would be out on the boat, but this is science and history coming together.)

Yep , it was totally cool. That step off made my heart rise. He did not beat the free fall record though as he pulled at five thousand feet. He was having an issue with his visor fogging and maybe getting a bit to close for comfort. I have jumped from 3200 feet on a static line and it scared the .... out me . It was fun to watch and a good job well done :thup

Thanks Mike, That was totally cool. Too bad we could not understand him and what he was saying on the way down. What a front porch view, and what a step. Cold up there too.

We watched it live. That guy has some...uh....spheres...

Note quite a walk on the moon but some pretty impressive science. I was watching it live too, and it was pretty neat.
