Honda 150 vs Suzuki 150 Outboard

curious to see preformance date.
UI've been told the Suzuki's have better gearing for higher top end with better fuel economy at higher speeds.
Would love to hear and solid imput.

I sea trialed both Honda 150 and Suzuki 150. I don't have any proof that either gets better mileage or better speed than the other. The high end speed when my boat was light was 49 knots, now is 43 knots (loaded for cruising). The idle to 30 knots was about 6 seconds (light boat). I am getting 2.3 to 2.4 miles a gallon at 24 mph. The reports on Hondas seem similar.

My decision was based on responsiveness out of the hole, or acelleration from one speed to another--the Suzuki.

The Suzuki is on the same frame as the 175 with 175 cu in displacement
The Honda is on the same frame as the 135 with 144 cu in displacement

The Suzuki can swing a 16" prop with lower gear ratio, so I am swinging 16" x 21" props--this seems a bit more effecient than the slightly smaller and lower pitch. The Hondas have an excellent reputation of durability.
The Suzuki 140 is a similar engine and there are validated reports of both 4000 hours and 7000 hours on these engines in commercial use. I personally know of several which were over 3500 hours and still going strong. The Suzuki have a 6 year warantee. I suspect that Honda has a comperable warantee.

They are both excellent engines. There are more Honda dealers.
 
Good points Bob .I have run both Honda and Suz. on C Dory products. You know how I feel , I am around many brands of four stroke outboards almost very day .They are all good . The big difference in my view is performance . They are all pretty darn reliable, have pretty good dealer networks and warranties , but one has a black cowling and performs above all the rest in the H.P. ranges we are speaking of . I sell all brands but Merc .Dont want to be too specific, but the company that has the best performing outboard marine motor is the one Evinrude NEVER mentions in their E Tec Infomercials. Oh I sell those E Tecs and Hondas and Yamahas too....................

I went with Twin Honda 150's because of their quality,enconomy and proven reliabliblity.
They are basicly the SAME engine as used in the Honda Accord Car.
We all know how reliable and durable Honda Accords are. I like the idea of having TWO Honda Accords behind my boat.

How about comments on the Suzuki 140s? They weight 100 lbs less than the Honda 135/150 or the Suzuki 150.
 
You cant go wrong with the 140 Suz! They are proven great motors . We have charter guys and rental folks using them with great results. The 2007 140 Suzukis take advantage of a lower final ratio and have better holeshot than the previous models, which werent bad.......The actual weight difference is something like #410 Vs. #478 per motor . Should push the Tomcat into the upper 30s loaded. Havent rigged one yet , but others have and have reported good performance . Again , they are all reliable these days.

The Suzuki 140 (which was the Johnson 140) has been documented in Goverment and charater servcie of longivity riveling diesels. See my post above. Definately a consideration for the TC--but they are lower displacement engines--and I like more cubics. I am not sure that you will get much better fuel economy however.
