Looks like a good option to save on the cost of a trailer. No more need to repack bearings, incur the cost of annual trailer registration, etc. The boat could be launched bow first by firmly applying brakes at the bottom of the ramp. No more embarrassment as others observe your poor backing skills.
As seen yesterday near our home at the Purdy ramp. Cindie saw it slide off but I just missed it as I was watching traffic.
I am not sure why exactly it let loose but we didn't see any winch strap in play. After the two riders jumped out of the boat, it tipped to the other side and slid down the pavement backwards about 30ft into some brush. Made me cringe for sure.

All too common..
The below boat was just purchased on its way to Louisiana via I 10 in Florida. Someone cut the trucker off, and he lost control. I don't know what type of brakes were on the trailer, and it was raining fairly hard. I wonder if there was an E/H system, if the outcome would have been different. The old adage is to hit something cheap. In this case the damage is several hundred thousand. The cops did catch the car which cut the truck off.
The boat was about a 40 foot Fountain. Quad 300's! He had insurance.

A few yrs ago I was towing our 25 home from Snohomish having just filled the fuel tank in prep for a long trip. On a two lane highway, speeds about 50 mph with a few side streets. Lady does a "California stop" and pulls out of a side road right in front of me. I dynamite my brakes (I actually had to stand in my seat and the ABS did it's thing on the truck) in order to not deep trunk her and the trailer brakes/tires lock up and smoke. At the next intersection I put it all in park, lock the brake, get out and let her have it. Ironic thing: her 2 yr old g-daughter in the back seat, in the middle, in a car seat. I probably would have killed that little girl as she is driving a small Hyundai. Granma is clueless.
Thank GOD no one was hurt and the boat/trailer did not separate or jack-knife. Some people should not drive or own cars.

The OP's original post looks exactly like an issue with trailer brakes, if I had to guess, SURGE! I'd speculate he had to tap his brakes going through that intersection and his trailer did a little more than that, sending him into that post.
Surge brakes are tough. I am pretty much over them. I like to manually operate my trailer brakes rather than leave it up to chance inputs at the hitch. It takes a lot more focus, but when your trailer gets squirrely a little nudge on the actuator and it just straightens right out. Otherwise you need to get on trailer brakes in emergency stops, and sometimes going downhill, but you still want to rely on your engine.
OR, his trailer had no brakes and needed them, because it got squirrely side to side and pushed his truck off the road.
Either way, a lot of these problems come to trailer brakes either engaging when they shouldn't or not engaging when the should.

It's all tongue-n-cheek. Ask anyone that knows me, really knows me; I am generous, funny and caring. Truth be told I like some people...maybe most people.
What I don't like are arrogant fundaments who have a sense of entitlement, who think they do no wrong and who have the perception that the world, and everyone in it, is meant to orbit them. I hate the jackals of society that prey on the weak, the sick, the young...and those that take and take and take but never give.
As far as grandma, she knew what she was doing. She was impatient. Period. And it almost killed/injured her g-daughter. Selfish. Period. I would never knowingly put my g-kids in that position and she did just that.
For me I think some people need to be at least verbally dumped on when they put others in harms way. Maybe granny ought to be off the road. I hope the kids tell their parents that some man yelled at grandma for her poor driving. If I get some bad juju from letting people know their behavior is unacceptable I say bring it on. I view the whole political correctness thing has gone way to far. But as you can see nobodies perfect.

Dusty told me a story once (or he told Catman and Brock told me) about how he came to get the name Dusty in the Navy. Often when there was a ship's crew or base that was lacking in discipline they would send Captain Lampman in to professionalize things. The old saying was that when he was done there was "nothing left but sawdust".
That story isn't all that remarkable in military settings, I suppose, but one thing he added truly struck me and I have used it many times since to help me in life. Dusty said, "And you know, I never had to raise my voice once."

On a somewhat lighter note- I noticed while driving that my vision in the left eye was really really bad when looking for oncoming traffic at an intersection. Explaining this to Dotty, I pointed to the left lens on my glasses and discovered that the lens was missing. Old age can sometimes be a b----!
