I have found my MMSI number, 338039873. This is a feature on my radio that I have not used yet but plan on playing with more. Only problem is that you need others to play with to make this worth it. So how about a new list, like the members list , where we can post our numbers. Now my radio will onlyu hold a limited amount of numbers so depending on who I am going traveling with or fishing with I can go to the list and get the right numbers to imput. So whos up for a list of MMSI numbers. email your favorite geek today see if we can get this started. I know like they did not have enough to do already around here.

Good idea. A question however, is there any reason that you would not like the world to know your personal MMSI number?? Not sure there is or isn't, just posing the question.

Heh...I went to Google, and entered "MMSI privacy concern".

The first relevant hit was this earlier C-Brat discussion...

I just updated the available C-Brat profile fields, so those that are interested can enter their MMSI numbers. Since profile information is only visible to logged in users, that addresses Warren's "members only" suggestion above.

To enter your MMSI number into your profile, click the Profile link at the top of any page, scroll down to the MMSI field, enter it then save.

You might want to enter it just in case you have need for it in the future. Sort of an online backup. Many of us simply entered our number into the VHF transciever and promptly forgot it.

It's a major PIA to recover the number. Fortunately I wrote it on the inside of my VHF manual. Unfortunately it took me several hours to discover where I put the )(*#@%) manual....

What is a MMSI number..??? Just recently bought a new STANDARD HORIZON VHF radio. Where is the number???
Ohmygawd.what am I missing???? :D If someone finds out what it is will the black helicopters find me????
Just kidding.....but would like to know more about it.

Ok, I just entered My number into my profile for the world to see. The only down side that I can think of is if you owe the mob money and they want to find you while fishing. Thank you site gods for making that happen so fast. Now I will be able to track you master fisherman while out on the water and find all your best spots..

Don't Have one Yet. Why? Through Boat US, you can get it on line right away, for free. BUT, that number is only registered in the US data bank and is useful only in US waters by US organizations, (US Coast Guard, and US Law enforcement or Search and Rescue). Should a need for the MMSI number in a S&R situation come up out side US waters, be it Canada, or Mexico, the US Data bank numbers are unavailable. IF you apply through the FCC for an MMSI number (free), you must have the FCC radio operators permit, (station license - some $100 and then for foreign waters also the individual operators permit - about $50*) and you have to wait for it to go through the FCC application process which from what I understand is one to two months. SO, practically speaking is the FCC route the best way to go? I think so, even if the license is only good for 10 years. For me, the chance of being in foreign waters exists, and if something happened there, I would want the MMSI number usable by the local S&R. Do I have it yet? No, have just recently decided which way I want to go.

I for 1 would like the whole dam world to know my MMSI# When I hit that DSC EMERGENCY BUTTON #338032619

I posted this on another thread, but I added my MMSI # to my below address/signature...

This is an easy to to make it available to anyone.

Be aware that it is not private when you do this. Personally, I want someone to know where I am to supplement my 'float plan'.

Sorry, I tried to delete this, but with no joy.

For those of you who are interested in using this (DSC and MMSI) process for communicating, There is an option, the CBRATS Group Call MMSInumber. I know this is an old thread that I found, but I want to add the group number for those interested, as a way of being able to do the DSC calling and yet not have to have every other CBRATS personal MMSI number stored in their radio. (Most will only take a list of 10 numbers in the individual number list.)

From the Group Call thread.

C-BRATS Group Call MMSI Number

As the wrap up to the warm up to the Friday Harbor CBGT, there was some discussion about a group call MMSI number for the C-BRATS. See this thread, “Communicating on the Water – MMSI”

http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=24129

I did some searching on the site, some PM’s with various parties that were or had interest in the topic, and found the most relevant thread to be:

"Sharing MMSI Numbers" here:
http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t= ... ber+cbrats

After some discussion with Bill, one half of the administrators for the C-BRATS, and getting a “go ahead” from him with the number that had been suggested in the mentioned MMSI thread, the “official C-BRATS Group Call MMSI Number” choosen is the one Sneaks shared as his own MMSI # modified to a group number per the FCC protocol, resulting in this number:

036697831 = C-BRATS Group MMSI # on DSC

If you put this number into your VHF radio under a group call list (the nomenclature may vary depending on your radio brand) you will be able to:
1. use it to call other C-BRATS in your area,
2. use it to call another C-BRAT boat you are traveling with, or meeting
3. use it to do a position request for C-BRATS in your area
4. You may also change or delete this number as you wish at any time

There may be other uses available that I am not aware of, and also there could be more uses on the way, who knows.?

C-BRATS moving into the digital age.
