Installing fishing rod holder

Good morning all:

If the world was perfect you would never have to drill a hole in your boat - however the world is not perfect and I need to install a fishing rod holder that will also hold my small propane grill.

I think the best place for me to install is on the boats port side on the rail were the non-skid is- more toward the cabin then the gas tanks. My questions are:

1. Is their wood on this section of a 2001 22 ft cruiser?

2. With the rather agressive non skid can you properly get a firm seal- there are four screws that hold the stainless steel plate in place.

3. Has anyone found a better spot to install the through the deck fishing pole holder/grill holder or better yet has someone found any clamp ons that do not require drilling into the boat??

Always appreciate everyones advise.

Ken,

I put several rod holders in Constant Craving, one of which is for the propane BBQ. It just takes a hole saw of the appropriate dimension, and a shot of good bourbon to steady the hand before you make the plunge. Be careful to check below the gunnel to ensure you're not going to cut through any wires or cables.

I mounted my BBQ about half way between the fuel filler and the back of the cabin. Yes, there is balsa in the gunnel. You may want to consider a stainless bolt in lieu of the screws in order to get a better grip. Mask of the area around the flange of the rod holder, then be somewhat liberal with a good bedding compound. I typically use Boatlife.

There are rail mounts, but I suspect that you do not have rails around the cockpit. I have also seen mounts that could be placed on a vertical surface, but don't recall where. Try looking at a Worst Marine catalog for additional ideas.

If you need, I could take a photo of the rod holder and BBQ and put it in the photo album.

One other thought. As you are planning on using a gimbal style mount for your BBQ, you're going to need to build a carrier for it when it is not in use and not mounted. The rod of the gimbal mount makes it awkward to store.

Ken,

As an aside, I think the best rod holder on the market is the Folbe. They are by far the easiest I have ever used when you have a fish on. I've used the tube type, Scotty, Fish-On, and Folbe. The Folbe is the one that I will use from now on.

I don't like the rod holders that you put the butt of the rod in the tube as you have no control over the angle of the rod. They are OK for moving from one fishing sport to the next, but for downrigger fishing I like to have the holders adjustable so that I can get a good arc on the rod and see it from the helm.

Ken,

When our boat was getting rigged at the factory, we asked them to put some rod holders on the boat. They installed Scotty side mounts on the side of the gunnel, about 2/3 of the way back towards the stern. They come with a backing and you can use that if you want more stability and you don't have to drill through the non-skid. It works great! What I like about the Scotty's is that you can buy other accessories that fit into the same mounts, i.e. BBQ mounts for Magma products, table mounts, fender rings etc. Here's a link to the page on the Scotty site showing the side mount:

I also bought the Folbe rod holders that Gary mentioned and they are great for removing long handled rods quickly.

Unfortunately, with both of them you still need to drill. You can mount those side mounts on a rail if you have a transom bar but the do slip a bit on the rail. Good luck in your search.

Oh, BTW: I just remembered that Scotty has just come out with Folbe look alikes. If you already have the Scotty rod holder bases these would be a good way to go (I like the Folbe bases better BTW)
