I'm sure there are tons of insurance co.s out there, besides boatus does anyone have any suggestions or recomendations for a good company. we currently have seahorse. haven't had to ever file a claim the premiums have been alittle lower on our old boat than boatus offered. I am getting quotes around $600. a year.300,00 liability,5000 medical expense. for a new 06 22cruiser. that is to include inland waters of north america and chesapeake and 15nm coastal waters. debating who to go with...

Personally, I have found State Farm to be very agressive in their boat lines. Although Allstate quoted me a ridiculously low rate one time, the debacle that later occurred made them unacceptable for any future contact by me. Boat US/West Marine are horrendously expensive, in my opinion. I only have a 16 but it too is new, with similar coverage, and is right at $100/year with StateFarm.

Similar coverage from Progressive is costing us about $200 a year.

Boat US took a majorage hit in hurricane damage in '04.

I had been using Boat/US 'till this year when they racheted up the rates. I switched to Progressive - and turned out my local Agent (house & cars using Safeco) was able to use handle it for me (with Progressive) at the same rates as Progressive on line. ($350/yr for our 2005 22ft Dory)

We use, and I do mean "Use" progressive for our boat coverage. We have filed two claims for thief in the last 3 months and have nothing but good service from progressive. They have not hassled us about the replacement amount for he equipment stolen and we received our checks within days. The only sore spot is that they did not cover my rods and reels. This was more the fault for the writer, farms, then with progressive. Everyone should check it see if your policy covers "non-attached personal equipment" or not . This can be rods and reels or hand held gps etc. Anything that is not bolted to the boat. You can have your policy changed to include these kinds of items for a small fee. I think we pay about $375 a year for our 2005 c- dory the susan E. In fact I just returned for west marine with a raymarine 2kw radome for $756 including tax. Thats about $200 off list. It was display model that has never been hooked up. I has Raytheon printed of the side but its just sticker so they are coming off.

Patty here. We have Progressive for the CD25---about $400 a year, and that is replacement value. That is important to ask for. We put in a claim for our stolen dinghy and received a check for the replacement value---$250 more than we paid for it. To quote Martha, "It's a good thing."

This is be beyond my scope, but a poll of how many use who for insurance may be in order. (just planting a seed) This may save some $ for a few here. State Farm , American Fam., Progressive, Boat US ect.......
Just an idea .

I went on progressive site and already got a better quote than if i stayed with seahorse, which is thru st.paul.
will definitely be changing. thanx again for about an extra $200 a year in ( and out for something else i'm sure) my pocket!

I have my car and jetski with progressive.com, and the price is fine. I use them for years. Slight discount for having 2 vehicals with them. The reason I like progressive is that you can easily go online and adjust your policy. Phone support is good. Made one claim with them that went well. And I actually bought the insurance over the phone at the jetski dealer before I took it home.

You can't do that with companies like All State, run by local agents. All State insures boats, but not jetskiis. As if my $10,500 watercraft is somehow not a boat. So I have a personal dislike for All State.

I also had a bad experience with Geico (for car). They gave me a great quote online, and then a month later raised the premium 300% and made me pay up!

I have used Boat US Ins for a number of years but if I can get the same coverage and save some money I'm switching.
I have a question to Progressive people in or around NY. My Boat US insurance requires me to either insure my boat for the entire east coast or I must keep it in the waters above the George Washington Bridge . When I filled out the online quote for Progressive ins. they gave me a great price (about 1/2 Boat US) but it didn't mention anything about water way restriction .Does anyone know if they require a rider for using your boat in different waters such as the Mississippi or the ICW?

Yes Boat U.S. quoted me double the Progressive premium as well. They try to get you to also sign-up for a Boat U.S. membership, which doesn't give you much of a discount. I just found the quote offensive, when you think of all the retired fixed income people in my area who wouldn't know to shop around. They certainly don't know what an internet forum is! ;)

cpt vic here when i checked out progressive site for the quote when you get further into the explanative of coverage my understanding was north america inland waters and up to 75 nm coastal was all inclusive i think maybe also canada?? not sure on that part though. that was better than my old policy .you should go to the site and let me know what you find out in comparison.

I just asked Boat US for a quote on our new 25 TomCat and was told they didn't wish to offer one! We had one claim with them in 10 years. Thanks for the comments. We'll check with progressive tomorrow. It seems Boat US has adopted West Marines new mantra "Never pay retail again". It's always retail plus!

Last week I talked with a few insurance companies about providing insurance for a 22' C-Dory, 2006 valued at $65/k.
We have been with Boat US for the past 10 yrs on a trawler without any claims. I have talked with Boat US regarding the cost on other brands of boats and have come to the conclusion that their min. policy is about $800.

For the 22 footer at $60/k they quoted $799 per year. This included 300/k liability, 10/k medical, 500/k fuel spill and $300/k uninsured boater.
Deductible was 1%. This is an agreed value type yacht policy.

Area coverage was the standard for this area covering all of Puget Sound out to the ocean and up to near the north end of Vancouver Island on the east side.

Next call was to State Farm. We have been with State Farm for over forty years insuring our cars and homes plus some life insurance. They are an excellent company providing good service to us even after filing claims for a couple of car accidents and a stolen car.

Their quote for a 65/k value boat was $540 per yr. This included 300/k
liability and 5/k medical. Fuel spill would be covered by the liaibility. Unisured boater was not available. Towing for car and boat was available at additional cost. $1/k deductible. Depreciated value on this one.

Area covered is Washington and British Columbia up to 50 miles offshore.

Last call was placed to Progressive. For the value at $65/k it included 300/k liability, 10/k medical and 2/k personal effects. Fuel spill and wreck removal unlimited coverage. Uninsured boater 100/k. Cost is $399.

They offer towing as an option. Quoted $27.00 yr. up to $500.

Deductibles were $500 on personal effects and $500 on collision.

They offer other coverages such as depreciated value however the one quoted above is for total replacement.

Area covered is in any state or province of Canada within 50 miles offshore.

Progressive gave me much better coverage for the Stanley-J and it actually cost me less than Boat US. I even have a cousin in the insurance business that could not beat the rate and excellent coverage. Thanks all for bringing this topic up. You saved me money and I got better coverage .

Great topic and Tom, great for the fine print to read and look for. Now I have to find it... I use USAA for all insurance, but, there was a dollar value...and I can not recall what that was, that forced them to "farm it out." I took a real hit the 1st year due to just coming off deployment and purchasing insurance just to have a new rig covered prior to me picking it up and dragging it cross country....the 1st time. Then at renewal time I called USAA and told them to get busy and find me insurance....because this topic came up about a year..... Dec04 "ish".... and USAA and Progressive had hooked up some type of deal and what a savings it was. About 1/2 of what I had been paying, in line dollar wise with other reports...

But, insurance is only good when you need it. I have been blessed and not needed it. Tom, sorry it was your loss...but glad to see they covered well. That makes me feel better. NOW....I GOTTA LOOK FOR THE NOT ATTACHED ITEM STUFF LINE... Off the top of my head.... Cookware, $500, rods and reals (more sentamental than quality...so I will buy some good ones soon...and store the sentamental...) $200, hand held GPS $400, laptop computer $2000, DVDs, $200.... Gortex jacket and pants $300, so just real quick like....for a big ol break in.... $3600..... wow... Thanks Starcraft Tom.... I'll buy ya a cool one for that. More than likely one of Pat's Trains.... that was good stuff!! :beer :beer Hummm wrong color beer...

Most home owners insurance policies have coverage for "Personal Property away from home" So you may be already covered with some of your non- attached items on your boats. Check with your home owners before you add extra coverage to your boating ins.
I know my fishing equipment and VHFradio (excluding Ham), chart plotter and pots and pans etc isn't worth having extra coverage especially when I have a $500 deductable
It like most car insurance policys may already give you rental car ins. All rental car companies always try to sell you additional coverage.
There must be an insurance person on this site that can wade in.

From what I've read here, plus based on my own experience, I'm glad I chose Progressive for my new CD 25. For example, Boat US had a dramatically increased deductible ( from $500 to $4000) for what they call "named storms". (e.g., hurricanes). Progressive doesn't do "named storms." Do the math.

The only "named storm" we've had in the Northern Neck in recent past history is Isabel. My wife knew that would be a bad one because it was her mother in law's name (My Mom).

I'm with Boat US so far, will check Progressive next renewal time.
