Ipad Holder

My new backup nav system is the Ipad using Navimatics. It needed to be secured well away from the compass. The area to the right of the starboard wiper motor above the window frame fit perfectly.

This picture and one of the mounting pieces are in my album under Upgrades.

The Ipad addition is nice and one I may do as well but I really like the mirror you have on the front window. I plan on putting mine in the same window but upper left hand corner so I can see what is going on in the cockpit and behind the boat.

H

Looks good. You likely already know this but you can lock the iPad screen into one position so that it doesn't rotate when you are traveling in some slop. Once I figured out the locking trick it made for a much steadier view. Of course it took me way too long to figure it out.

The "rear view mirror" is a great addition!

If you have room, get a big curved one (designed for ski/wakeboard boats), and put it up out of the way where it won block your forward view in the windows.

The closer you mount it to yourself, the greater the apparent viewed size of objects, and the angles covered. Just try not to make it into a head-knocker!

This could be one of those great little buys we made the list about a couple of months ago (if it qualifies for the cost limits).

Should be able to find a used one cheap with all the boats being parted out/parasitized these days by marine yards. :wink

The other trick I needed for my first gen iPad (ios 4) was to disable "shake", which popped up a menu that had to be manually dismissed. Unfortunately, I had to jailbreak the iPad to get that feature. A quick grovelling of the web doesn't indicate that this was included in ios 5. Also, since I use a Bad Elf GPS, I had to install Backgrounder to keep the nav app active, otherwise it powered off the GPS when I switched apps and took up to 30 seconds to re-acquire position when I switched back.

As far as positioning the iPad, I wear progressive lenses and mounting something above the windshield would have me looking at the ceiling to be able to read it!

I looked for other places to mount it. In the picture you can see the Azimuth compass. Placing the Ipad anywhere within 12-18" drove it and the regular compass crazy. And I didn't want it obstructing any outside view. And really, it is a back-up. So I can look-up if I have to. I will probably have it set out to a 6-12 mile area anyway for the "big picture".

I can lock screen rotation at least two ways. Swipe up with four fingers and then swipe the bar on the bottom to the right. This displays buttons to play music, skip ahead or behind, change the volume and brightness, and lock the screen rotation with the button farthest to the left.

You can also go to settings >general and find the section that says "Use Side Switch to:" and select lock rotation. Then use the toggle switch on the side to lock and unlock screen rotation as needed.

Eh voila, the secret revealed by 20dauntless. And when it's locked it really doesn't rotate when you cross the wake of the big guy who just cut accross you bow! Of course everything else rotates.

I guess I missed that part about "swipe up with four fingers"! Did't see it in "Getting to Know Your iPad" or whatever it is called - all two pages! Hmmm.
