Island Time PC

Even though I am a Mac guy I keep an eye on the dark side and recently found out about Island Time PC, a company that assembles small form-factor PCs for marine installations. Might be worth checking out. For OS, there is Linux and for Windows, I hear Microsoft has finally got it right with Windows 7. On the Mac side, there is the Mini, of course. With either of these you have to figure out what to do about a monitor -- so, often easier to just go with a laptop. Still, I was glad to hear of these guys from a satisfied trawler owner. One tip from the same source: buy a fanless unit to help keep salt air away from components.

Warren, when you translate that from Microsoft speak, I believe it means that the security patches only come out every other Tuesday....

These look very interesting and seem to be fairly reasonably priced. I like having charts on my laptop as a backup and also for planning purposes, but I find it to be inconvenient to use underway. It's hard to control the charts while bouncing around in the boat (much easier to use the nice rubber buttons on the Raymarine), it's hard to see the laptop screen since it sits on the top of the companionway to the V-Berth, and it messes up the KVH Azimuth 1000 so radar overlay doesn't work. Overall I still think MFD's are better for boats our size, but that may not be true for long.
