Jacari Maru, Northbound to Alaska

Jay,

Our summer trip was just under 90 days and also just under 2,000 miles.

Compared to our c-dory, we just crawl along now. I like 6-7 hour runs traveling 40 to 50 miles per day.

We have adapted to the different style of cruising. We now seek out anchorages instead of docks and more remote routes as we don't need fuel docks from Everett, WA to Ketchikan, AK. We cook breakfast and lunch underway. The slower boat also provided better sightseeing. Like sitting in your living room while the world goes by outside!

Enjoyed your photos. Point Baker looked like an interesting little community and harbor. Passed just north of there in 2004 on way to Rocky pass between Wrangle and Kake. If we pass by there again will check it out

On way from Craig to Ketchican how were the sea conditions coming around Cape Chacon and did the Fox take his Dory around their too.

Thanks for sharing.

Warren,

We were fortunate to have about two weeks of nice weather while we cruised P O W.

Jay,

The weather was mild the day we rounded Cape Chacon, but as we turned NW to return to Ketchikan, a SW wind and later swells built up. By the time we turned into Tongass Narrows, I had had enough followings seas and hand steering for a while.

The Red Fox returned north from Craig and didn't go around Cape Chacon.

I think that a CD 22 or 25 could have made that rounding with that day's weather and seas.

If the weather should turn bad, there are many small coves to hide in before and after the cape.

Larry and Nancy we had a great time with you in Ketchikan. We'll always remember your advice about Alaska. Larry says, "They've got to be bigger up here!"

Not to hijack the thread Larry and Nancy but, Don and Dee, did you ever do a write-up on your Alaskan trip? I don't recall seeing anything but I'm sure inquiring minds want to know.
