Ok ... Jay (of HunkyDory Fame) is now RETIRED!

I'm opening the betting window to see if he can do a SECOND week of retirement! Any taker's?

According to the WildBlue thread, Jay and Jolee did a recon to Colter Bay and Bridge Bay (both iced-in) in their truck/camper. After action report to follow.

...so, can he make is as an 'ol Retiree, or will he mistakenly get up and go to work Monday morning by mistake????

Best,
Casey

It really helps if you burn all your bridges on the way out... something like, "I am SO outta here! So long, loooooooooosers!" No chance that you'll be able to step foot back on that job site. Of course, since we were employed by the company we owned, that didn't work for us, so this is NOT tested advice. 8)

I'm thinking Jay will have no problem finding adventure after adventure to keep him and Jo-Lee occupied.

Congrats, Jay! :thup

Best wishes,
Jim

Took me 3 tries to get it right ! Throw away the watches - remove all calendars - take a hand full of sleeping stuff so you don't know what day or time it is when you wakeup, then you MIGHT succeed.

Jay,

Best wishes on your "new" career.

Now you'll have all the time you need to prowl the aisles of Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight and West Marine "just looking" and "wishing". And, since you're retired you now have the luxury of putting off until tomorrow what you could have done today.

This week has been a great start on our new life style. Along with checking out Colter and Bridge Bay spent two nights at the Mammoth campgrounds the only campground open in Yellowstone Park this early in the season. Photos of my idea of a great way to start a new life.
DSC00011_2.jpg
DSC00012_1.jpg

Snow deep around the Lake and most of the Park with the Mammoth area and Lamar Valley the exception. A very good number and variety of animals in these areas. Saw large herds of elk and buffalo with small groups of pronghorn antelopes, 5 moose, 2 grizzly bears, 3 black bears and one lone wolf.

Now in the process of getting ready for a two week Northern California trip to see relatives and relax on the Mendocino Coast. Then back to Wyoming and hope to see Casey and Sandy, El and Bill, John and Edna, the Wild Blue Crew and whomever else might show up in the northwest corner of Wyo before we head off in early July for a very leisurely road trip to then cruise PWS in Alaska followed by exploring more of the Yukon Lakes. Probably be back home mid Sept with the adventure just still beginning.

Friendly enough, but the Bridges have been dismantled for any return to work other then like you Jim something that your payed for that's fun entertaining and in no way could really be considered work. I put a side view shot of the Teewinnot in our Album.

Dave W---Do need to toss the watch, but I've taken enough of that sleeping stuff so I could stay awake while working nights. Hope to never ever pop another ambien CR again. Have so much we want to see and do the problem could be adjusting to slowing down and smelling the roses while making the best use of the time we still have.

RCurry, appreciate the Best Wishes, but I'd just as soon be working as cruise the aisles of any of the stores you mentioned. These places only get my attention out of pure necessity.

Thanks all for the Best Wishes--especially you Casey.

Jay - I have a countdown widget on my Macbook! Congrats, I am about two and a half years behind you! Plus, I have no death wish, so our adventures will be a bit tamer than yours...between dying being eaten by a grizzly bear and dying drooling in a rocking chair, I pick the rocking chair! Can hardly wait to get retired though!

Enjoy your retirement as it goes by very fast.
I retired at 56. Thought I had it made. Now I am 70 and where oh where did it all go. The time flies by in retirement.

Do all you can do and afford as soon as you can do it.

Enjoy your time.

Jay and Jolee - HOORAY!! We started out the same way - in a great little camper not unlike yours. And then we threw on backpacks and hiked the Appalachian Trail end to end - took 6 1/2 months. On trail, you have assumed names (like the French Foreign Legion) and a new direction in life -- North! We assume that same direction will be pulling ever more strongly for you two. Not hard to cut those strings (although we still flinched at class starting time for years every morning).

Looking forward to sharing a toast to you two at Bridge Bay around 17th of June.

Welcome to the Halcyon Days of Retirement!!!!

"Not from successful love alone,
Nor wealth, nor honor'd middle age, nor
victories of politics or war;
But as life wanes, and all the turbulent
passions calm,
As gorgeous, vapory, silent hues cover the,
evening sky.

As softness, fulness, rest, suffuse the frame,
like freshier, balmier air,
As the days take on a mellower light, and the
apple at last hangs really finish'd and
indolent ripe on the tree,
Then for the teeming guietest, happiest days
of all!
The brooding and blissful halcyon days!"

- Walt Whitman

Jay,

Nice photos with you two and your pets! :D I think that truck camper will suit you well as an integral part of your travel plans. I know how excited we were to get started with our retirement and can sense that "let's get going" in your post. It's easy to get caught up in "so much to see and do" that you try to squeeze it all in the first year or two... especially after fitting trips in around your work schedule. For us, there are no more 700 mile driving days. Find a pace that suits you, and let the seasons help tailor your travels.

I used to really enjoy the winter in the frozen northland... skiing, chopping and carrying wood to heat the house (I felt like Paul Bunyan), hiking and 4-wheeling in the snow. We did the activities of the season... until one January when Joan said, "Take me someplace warm!" I balked, but (of course) she was right... for us. It really did change our lives and traveling style.

While you may still enjoy those Wyoming winters and feel the call pulling you north to explore, without a work schedule to keep you in one place you have YEAR 'ROUND boating and camping options... by following the seasons.

We are very excited for you with this next chapter in your lives and look forward to the posts of your adventures.

Hope we get to see you before you head north this summer.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Hi Jay,

Congratulations on the retirement!

Great pictures. When will you be in N Cal.? that is not too far from us. Maybe we could meet up on the coast.

Steve

Help, I'm drooling all over myself  Anybody got a large bucket, quick the laptop is almost under water. :cry

Jay, congrats and enjoy. You deserve it. Take your time and watch the sunrise and the sunsets. ( I worked nights for many years, and the best part was seeing the sun come up.)

Jay and Jolee,

We have been following your adventures for the past few years. Congradulations and best wishes on your retirement. We look forward to hearing and seeing more of your adventures. I have retired several times in the last several years and maybe it is time to do it for good. You guys along with El and Bill and Jim and Joan are truly an inspiration.

Best,
Harper

Jay & Jolee - We were going to head to Bridge Bay yesterday, but the weather didn't look too promising. So instead we will be up this coming Wednesday (26 May) where the Far West II will rest for the season with a few side trips or two.
Looking forward to catching up with you two before you go on the big one.
The streams are flooding around here. Everything is now green, finally. Just waiting for the sun. Take care. John & Edna

Much thanks for the continued Congrats & Best Wishes

Pat---Am hoping to keep the bears and rocking chair except for the ones in the photo at the Mammoth Campground at bay for a while yet. Absolutely no death wish here. Love life and hope to continue to experience the best of it & think all of us C-Brats do in our own way though odds are you will outlast me in your rocking chair. I just hope to match my Dad who has as one might expect a similar philosophy to me and just passed his 86Th birthday. Unless his ole mule throws or kicks him again even worse than in the past suspect the cancer he's been battling for the last 15 years will finally be what takes him down for the count.

Sure know how you feel while counting down those days and know when you get there they will be enjoyed if somewhat different then me "every bit as well".

Jim----We too no longer enjoy the frozen northland outside activities like we did in the past, but our small log home is a direct likeness to El and Bill's description of their "Safe Harbor" in "Halcyon Days". On our very limited budget find the little town of Cokeville and surrounding area along with the boat and camper the perfect combination to allow us to do as you described "following the seasons" and still have the safe Harbor that we have not yet wearied of returning to and of course it helps to have a son and his family living here in Cokeville too.

El & Bill---June 17Th. That's the day our Grandchild is due for arrival. Still hope to share a toast with you. Love that poem. Our hope is to live similar to you the days it describes.

Steve---will email you concerning the coast.

Harvey---the SUNRISES!! What beautiful ones I've seen through the years that I would have missed not working nights. Working outside at over 7000 ft with a ridge to the east about 10 miles off made for spectacular sunrises. The combination of their beauty and knowing the work day was about done when they occurred was one of the very few good things about working nights.

Harper---Glad to hear you've enjoyed our sharing of past adventures. Hope we are fortunate enough to have and share many more. To be compared favorably in anyway with El and Bill and Jim and Joan I take as a huge compliment.

John---Didn't think there was anyway you would get the Farwest 11 in today. Sure hope you do this coming week like planned. Snowed off and on all morning here so don't think its a sure bet. We too are looking forward to seeing you guys before heading north.

Thanks again to all,

Jay

Jay, Let me add my voice to the chorus of Congratulations!

Hope to see you guys in the San Juans!

Warren

Thanks Warren,

Can't say when yet, but on our list is making a Gathering there. A beautiful place and so many people like you who I've grown to like and admire through sharing on this site. The only hesitancy is the population density in your whole area. Find it a real trial just going north or south on the Freeway through the Seattle area. Only pure luck saved us from a major wreck last year after we purchased a new trailer for the boat at Mount Vernon and then headed south. We both declared after that we would only drive through there in the wee hours of the morning on future trips and Pat thinks I have a death wish. Think it much safer walking around the back Yellowstone Grizzly bear country without shotgun or any other bear deterrent then driving anywhere around the Seattle area.
