June cruise to Ketchikan from Anacortes

We originally were going to tow our Tom Cat to Prince Rupert then cruise to points north. Margaret has only 3 weeks of vacation available, so we'd rather spend a few more days on the boat than in the truck. As it is right now our plans are to tow to Anacortes and launch on June 3rd. Our destination will be Ketchikan then cruise home. Fishing will be our main layovers and hope to get it all done to be back home by June 23rd. Anyone else have simular plans for a cruise, our dates are somewhat flexable? See you at the Seattle Boat show.

Gene..I live at Lake Tahoe. I booked passage June 15 on the ferry to Ketchikan from Prince Rupert. Two days or so in Ketchikan and then by ferry again to Hollis on Prince of Wales for three weeks. Returning to PR about July 15. Taking gismo 16' C-Dory on a trailer. Truck has a pop up light small camper. Basicly three weeks in and around Southeast Al. Be leaving here around June 7-8-9. Prince Rupert on the June 15 by 10am.
Destination, Cape Decision Light House SE Alaska.

The cruise through British Columbia is marvelous -- you might want to take time on the way up and not be too concerned whether you reach Ketchikan or not. Can't speak to the fishing.

Another consideration -- take the ferry to Prince Rupert or Ketch and cruise back. This would be costly, but would essentially double your time to travel (and fish) along this marvelous coast.

Just some thoughts you have probably considered ...

Gene,
My wife and I are planning a Prince Rupert with a stop in Rivers Inlet to visit family in June also, a yearly thing for us. Have not decided weather we are leaving from Bellingham or trailering to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and launching there.
Another option.

Gene, just one comment. You are allowing only 20 days to go both ways between Anacortes and Ketchikan. Can it be done? Maybe. We made it from Blaine to Ketchikan in 6 days - but we were going pedal to the metal, AND we caught every break on the weather. You are in the TomCat, so going fast is not hard, but you might not catch the weather breaks we did, especially both ways. Beyond that, it is not nearly as enjoyable to be on that kind of time frame. It was far more enjoyable to take a week to do Behm Canal, Misty Fjords and the circumnavigation of Revillagigedo Island. I for one am sorry I did not get to cruise leisurely on the BC portion - there are dozens of spots I would have loved to stop and sightsee. The guys who did the return trip took over two weeks. Do yourself a favor, and allow enough time to enjoy the trip, as I plan to do next time...

El & Bill;

We agree that the BC coast is beautiful. Ketchikan is just a point that we will aim for. If we don't make it up there "OH WELL". There is good fishing in much of BC and we will take our time. Thanks for the reply your advise is always treasured.
Gene

Don;

P.M. me with your details, we just applied for our passports today. What is the cost to ferry to Vancouver Is? Is Port Hardy that much closer. Or is the Bellingham North route worth the extra time?

Pat;

Thanks, we are going to take time to smell the seafood. If we don't make it to Ketchikan there is always 2008. We want to spend some time on Prince of Wales Is. and maybe go up to Angoon & Juneau next year. We will have a tentative plan to go to Ketchikan but, it's not written in stone.

Notice that this thread has been dormant for several months. Our current plan is to head out of Port Hardy around the first of June and return the end of July. Diestination is the Juneau area--but no specific plans. Definately there are great places in BC--and June is still early enough that it will not be too crowded.

Hi Alaska bound Brats,

We plan to leave the Puget Sound for SE Alaska in late May or by June 1 at the latest. With our 7 knot speed, we will only make 40-50 miles per travel day.

We hope to be in SE AK by mid to late June and will stay until Early August.

Due to our slower speed, we won't be 'buddy boating' with any C-Dorys, but we hope to see some C-Brats along the way.

If you see us, wave or stop in for a cup!

Larry,
Do you have ham radio aboard? I just got out my Alaska charts and realized that on my Cal 46 I had a chart locker 36" high, 24" wide and 30" deep--I cannot take all of these on the C dory--so I guess it is essential and a back up GPS--how quickly we forget what things were like 10 years ago!

Good chance we will pass or meet up--and can either do this vis cell phone (from areas with reception) or Ham radio.

Keep your eye out for Island Ranger as well - we're planning to head up from South Whidbey on June 17th headed to SE Alaska, coming back the end of July or early August.

You guys make me drool. Drooooolllll. Dang it, I've made that trip dozens of times, and want to do it again.

Have a great trip.

Hi All,

Knotty C is planning on leaving around July 7 and return around August 11. We'll keep an eye out for others while we're up there. We hope to see some brats along the way.

Dee

Where were all of you last year when Pat (Daydream) and I did this trip? I took a full month. Left on June 8 and returned on July 7. Pat did the trip up and Patti joined in for a week and they flew back from Ketchikan and I accompanied their boat sans stand n crew back to the PNW.

Bob,

No, I don't have Ham radio. If I see your boat I'll call you on VHF, otherwise I will try to post progress reports here on the Brats.

David,

Why not gas up your boat and join the party? LOL

Sunfish will be heading north from Port Townsend at o-dark thirty on June 2nd. We're going to try and check into Canadian customs at Nanaimo and go from there.

I wish I could rent or buy some of the Canadian charts used (but not too out of date) instead of paying $970 for a new portfolio.

Hunkydory planning on heading south out of Skagway June 6th that's a week later than earlier schedule. Going to Elfin Cove, Pelican and then down the out side of Chichagof Island eventually ending up back in Skagway. Have to cut back on time allocated for trip due to health problems of Daughter in law and commitments made to help them out.

If you see a blue CD 22 with a green Mokai on top or being towed give us a call on VHF. We try to hail any CD we see. In the past they have been very rare to see.

well poo, Jay, you'll be hitting Elfin Cove about a week before me. How about a full report on the living conditions there?

Ken

Depending on how long your going to be in that general area may still make contact. Due to previously mentioned cut back on allotted time we will probably only go down Chichagof Island to Khaz Point. Looks like a fun isolated place to explore for a week or so of course weather permitting. Then it will back to Pelican for fuel and another stop at Elfin Cove. Haven't any plans from there yet to much depends on weather and time left.

From what I've read about Elfin Cove sounds similar to our present home town of Cokeville in a lot of ways only even less people, much more isolated and no fuel available except for commercial. One eating out place and a general store. Have been wanting to see this place for many years. Once we leave home there's no Internet for us, so by the time we do any reporting you'll most likely know more than us.

Thanks for the links. Added one to my favorites. Will be interesting to do quick checks of Elfin cove weather and forecast in the next month before leaving.
