Keeping the bilge dry....

Funny (not really) about cockpit drains being the source of incoming water,
what you don't want.

So, here I am with friends sailing from Funchal, Maderia to Antigua, yup mid
ocean early '84. Winds about 30K and we were booking along in the C&C61
at 12 K or so. After a bit, one day, the boat slowed to 8K and because of the
glorious weather, everyone (about 10 of us) were on deck enjoying.

Well, someone off watch headed for the head below followed by a scream
"We're sinking!!!". Belowdecks, the floor was water covered. Everyone
rushed below and started pumping the two manual bilge pumps.

Longer story short, what had happened was a fitting for an overboard bilge line,
having an antiphon loop (secured above the waterline), had failed letting the
outgoing bilge line fall below the waterline, on starboard as I vividly recall while
we were on a starboard tack, allowing water to run retrograde into the boat.

Those 20 minutes I do not care to repeat. I love water but it has to be on my
terms...

Take care out there!

Aye.
